Exploring New Slopes

avatar

Today, again the sun was showing its face. Temperatures rose a bit more and I skied mostly without a jacket. Pretty nice but also giving a slight undertone to skiing.

Growing up as a Dutch-Austrian, I have had my fair share of time spent on ski’s. As kids (we were too young to remember our first time on ski’s), snow never was an issue. Even in the relatively low-altitude area where my family is from always had snow. Today, seasons get shorter and artificial snow has become the standard in many places. For sure on the “Talabfahrt”.

Especially today the always pressent issue of global warming was stuck in my head. While my four year old niece was having her first ever “real” ski lesson on the slopes (she did a full Talabfahrt), I kept asking myself how many years there are left for her to enjoy the snowy alps like I did all my life. It’s really these moments when reality kicks in for me.

Looking at the situation from when I was four until my niece’s fourth year today. And extending into the future when she has my age. It make me wonder. Can we still turn things around for the better?

What do you think?

Please enjoy skiing for the two of us. I don't ski anymore, and this situation persists for something like half a decade now... I miss it so much :/
