Ahoy - A Weekend on the Water

Last weekend I spent sailing with two of my old time friends. I met them long time ago during our first week of our bachelor studies on naval architecture. Obviously, sailing it where our interests met at that time. By now we are all maritime enthusiasts!

Every since that first week of our bachelors, we have been sailing. Yep the first week of that study program consists of sailing!

Anyways, over the years we rented boats over the summer to explore the many waters the Netherlands has to offer. On some occasion we even managed to sail over to England.

The past weekend was less adventurous and more like a catch up on things kind of weekend. Using my friends’ sailboat we crossed the Ijsselmeer from Lelystad to Enkhuizen. Had drinks and dinner there and the next morning we sailed back go Lelystad. Here is part of our trip recording:

The boat we used is an X79. This is a Danish design of 7.9 meter, built in 1985. Although old, it’s quite a racy design with great sailing abilities! At light winds it passes many other sailors on the water!

Even thought the weather was pretty crazy the days running up to the weekend, we luckily had quite good weather. Even some sunshine near the end of the final day. On that day, the wind unfortunately died out and we had to cruise the final bit back home by engine. Time to relax on deck I guess:

I really enjoy sailing. Especially with this crew! We all know how the act of sailing goes and not much needs to be said in many situation on board. Setting the sails, maneuvering, navigation. We all have our tasks and things work smoothly. It’s a great feeling when on a ship!
