Hockey game and Its Intricacies

Hockey Game is played by two teams of eleven players each. Each player carries a hockey stick. The game is about striking the ball into the opponent's goalpost from within the shooting circle. The ball used is the same as the cricket ball in weight and size, but it is white in colour. The game is similar to football, only that it is played with a stick. A score count is just like that of football. Hockey players use padded rings on their legs.

Rules and Regulations of Hockey Game
The game is started with a push-pass on the centre line at the middle of the pitch.
During the play, all players are to use the hockey sticks (flat surface only). High ball may be stopped dead and dropped perpendicularly with the palm, but it must not be propelled.
Scoring a goal is when the ball is hit from within the shooting area and crosses the goal-line between the posts and below the crossbar.
When playing the ball, a player should not:

  • raise any part of the stick above the shoulder level at either the beginning or end of a stroke;
  • undercut the ball;
  • use the round surface of the stick;
  • stop the ball with any part of the body. only the goalkeeper is allowed to use his legs within the circle;
  • take part in the game without having the stick in his hand;
  • hit the ball between his own feet.

A hockey player can:

  • push, trip, charge at his opponent;
  • hold, hook, lift, strike or in any way interfere with an opponent's stick;
  • allow his body between his opponent and the ball;
  • run in front of an opponent so as to break his stride

A player is in an off-side position if he is nearer to his opponent's goal line than the ball, unless:

  • he is in his own half of the field of play; or
  • there are at least two opponents nearer to their own goal-line than he is
