My New Sports Obsession - FIFA Women's World Cup 2023

Sports is a unifier that has always been. I could imagine how weeks after the end of the Premier League and Champions league became quite boring as there were no exciting moments to talk about. I've loved football among all sports that can be. Perhaps because I enjoy playing it too.

I have not been a fan of women's football not because of any bias. To me, I didn't really find it interesting since I thought there would be no much physique, skills and strength put into the play as obtainable in the male counterparts. I'm glad my mind is changing towards this sports and I am getting interested especially this 2023 edition of FIFA Women's World Cup.

The FIFA Women's World Cup is an international association football competition contested by the senior women's national teams of the members of Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA), which is the sport's international governing body.

The Women's World Cup 2023 is taking place in Australia and New Zealand and it started on July 20 and will run through to August 20. This would be the first Women’s World Cup to feature 32 teams competing in eight groups.

This year's world cup is tagged "Beyond Greatness" and it is quite an interesting tag especially as women are making great achievements around the world over. It'll be a booster for the girl child out there that is seeking validation that she can also stand out to be great in whatever venture she finds herself.

My interest in this year's FIFA women's world cup could not be far from the widely reported performance of the Nigerian women in their last match against Canada. We've not really had such a massive media rally for the women's international tournament.

The Super Falcons of Nigeria made a strong first performance in their 27th FIFA Women’s World Cup match. After finishing draw (0-0) with Olympic champions Canada, the outing of the ladies were adjudged impressive by many.

Of notable performance so far is that of Nigeria's captain and Goalkeeper - Chiamaka Nnadozie. The 22-year-old was marked the heroin of the match against Canada after saving Christine Sinclair’s penalty at the beginning of the second half. She made remarkable clearing punches from free kicks and corners and was decisive in coming off her line to give confidence to her team.

The inspiration that the team is dispensing is quite encouraging and worth celebrating. This is why I am getting interested than ever. I will be following up as many matches as I can.

I hope it gets more exciting as we get along.
