Cuando el cuerpo falla, cuando la esperanza es la única fuerza que nos hace seguir adelante, no hay nada como el amor para llenarnos de la valentía necesaria para seguir por los caminos más complicados, pues no esta muerto quien recibe una mala noticia y decide seguir luchando y haciendo lo que más le apasiona, esta muerto solo quien decide rendirse.

En el mundo del fútbol no hay frase más potente y esperanzadora que la dijo un 30 de enero de 2018 el técnico argentino Miguel Angel Russo, "Todo se cura con amor".

Ese día justamente llegaba para empezar la segunda temporada a cargo del Millonarios de Bogota, logrando consagrarse como campeón del torneo finalización 2017 ante Independiente de Santa Fe, siendo un estandarte de resilencia, ya que como revelaría más tarde, para esa final la cual ganaron 3 a 2, ya conocía su diagnóstico, e inclusive, ya había recibido su primera quimioterapia, y pese a la debilidad de su cuerpo y de su mente por todo lo que estaba pasando, fue su alma y su amor por este bello deporte lo que le dio la fuerza para no abandonar a los suyos en aquel momento tan oscuro de su vida.

That day was just around the corner from his second season in charge of Millonarios de Bogota, where he was crowned champion of the 2017 finals tournament against Independiente de Santa Fe, serving as a symbol of resilience. As he would later reveal, for the final, which they won 3-2, he already knew his diagnosis and had even received his first chemotherapy. Despite the weakness of his body and mind due to everything he was going through, it was his soul and his love for the beautiful sport that gave him the strength to not abandon his family at such a dark time in his life.

Pocos tenemos la bendición de conseguir nuestra pasión en algún momento de la vida, ya que en ocasiones, por cuestiones que muchas veces no podemos controlar, tenemos que dedicarnos a algo que no adoramos simplemente por el miedo a luchar por nuestros sueños, o lo que es aún peor, simplemente porque no tenemos otra opción, y como me dijeron una vez de pequeño, los platos de comida no se llenan solos mágicamente.

Few of us are blessed enough to pursue our passion at some point in our lives. Sometimes, for reasons we often cannot control, we have to dedicate ourselves to something we don't love simply because we are afraid to pursue our dreams, or worse, simply because we have no other option. Otros afortunados como Russo, desde muy jóvenes ya conocen lo que es el amor. No escribo esto para referirme a un aspecto meramente romántico, pues el amor tiene muchas ramificaciones, y para mí, no hay nada más bonito que conseguir eso que te apasiona, eso que te hace levantarte de la cama con ánimo para seguir haciendo la misma actividad una y otra vez, y que no sientas ese peso en cada paso, sino que por el contrario, cada paso se de con más ganas que el anterior. Eso en mí pequeña percepción de la vida, es el más puro significado de amor propio.

Other lucky ones, like Russo, already know what love is from a very young age. I'm not writing this to refer to a merely romantic aspect, as love has many ramifications, and for me, there's nothing more beautiful than achieving what you're passionate about, what makes you get out of bed with the desire to continue doing the same activity over and over again, and not feeling that weight with each step, but on the contrary, each step is taken with more enthusiasm than the last. Nacido en Lanus un 9 de abril de 1956, Miguel Angel Russo desde muy joven conoció el fútbol, y a la corta edad de 19 años, debutó como profesional en Estudiantes de La Plata. Su fidelidad fue máxima como futbolista del Pincha, pues fue su único club como jugador, llegando a disputar 440 partidos oficiales entre competiciones nacionales e internaciones, desempeñándose como un mediocampista muy robusco e intenso, que incluso, cuando su equipo lo necesito, se posicionada como defensa para defender su arco de todos los futbolistas rivales que quisieran "hacerle daño" a su gran amor.

Born in Lanús on April 9, 1956, Miguel Angel Russo was introduced to football from a very young age, and at the tender age of 19, he made his professional debut with Estudiantes de La Plata. His loyalty to the club was paramount as a player for Pincha, as it was his only club as a player, and he played in 440 official matches across both national and international competitions. He performed as a very robust and intense midfielder, who even, when his team needed him, would position himself as a defender to defend his goal against all opposing players who might want to "hurt" his true love.

Con la selección argentina llegó a ser un futbolista determinante en varios proyectos, siendo muy resaltante su desempeño en la fase clasificatoria para el mundial del 86', junto a otras leyendas consagradas en el olimpo del balonpie como Diego Armando Maradona. Una lesión de rodilla lo sacaría de la lista definitiva para el mundial en México, donde la albiceleste se consagraría como bicampeona mundial, y aunque odio esa decisión por muchos años, comentaría más adelante en su vida que fue algo que terminó por entender, pues físicamente no estaba en su mejor momento, y el balón solo merece que los mejores jueguen con él.

With the Argentine national team, he became a key player in several projects, particularly notable for his performance in the qualifying phase for the 1986 World Cup, alongside other legendary footballers like Diego Armando Maradona. A knee injury would take him off the final roster for the World Cup in Mexico, where the Argentine national team would become two-time world champions. Although he hated that decision for many years, he would later comment that it was something he eventually came to understand, as he wasn't physically at his best, and the ball only deserves to be played with by the best.

Jugó su último partido con Estudiantes de La Plata un 15 de junio de 1988, pero este no fue su adiós al fútbol, pues inmediatamente empezó a formarse como entrenador, y solo 1 año y medio después, ya estaba dirigiendo en el banquillo de Lanus, equipo de su ciudad natal. Esta nueva faceta le trajo muchas emociones y éxitos, y ya desde el principio demostró ser una persona "diferente", pues devolvió a un Lanus en horas bajas hasta dos veces a la máxima categoría del fútbol argentino.

He played his last game with Estudiantes de La Plata on June 15, 1988, but this wasn't his farewell to football. He immediately began training as a coach, and just a year and a half later, he was already leading the team at Lanus, his hometown team. This new role brought him many emotions and successes, and from the very beginning, he proved to be a "different" person, returning a struggling Lanus team to the top league of Argentine football twice.

As 2017 approached, Russo experienced his most emotional moment, winning the championship with Millonarios de Bogota. As I mentioned earlier, despite already knowing his diagnosis and having even received his first round of chemotherapy that same day, he didn't abandon his team. From his position as the team's leader on the bench, they made history in Colombia.

Con Boca Juniors tuvo dos ciclos más, el primero de 2020 a 2021, donde pese a conseguir un par de títulos y llegar a la semifinal de la Libertadores, sus resultados no fueron los esperados por los aficionados xeneizes. Su último ciclo, que también fue su último trabajo como entrenador, empezó en 2025, y pese a tomar un equipo sumido en una de las peores crisis de su historia, su amor por los colores que tantas alegrías le generó, no le permitió escapar del reto, dejando sus últimos alientos en la Bombonera, y aunque su cuerpo ya no podía continuar y su mente se veía afectada por las mismas heridas de su enfermedad y las múltiples críticas de la afición, fue su amor por el fútbol lo que le permitió seguir adelante.

He had two more spells with Boca Juniors, the first from 2020 to 2021, where despite winning a pair of titles and reaching the Libertadores semi-finals, his results were not what Boca Juniors fans expected. His last spell, which was also his last job as coach, began in 2025, and despite taking over a team mired in one of the worst crises in its history, his love for the colors that brought him so much joy did not allow him to escape the challenge, leaving his last breaths at La Bombonera. La muerte física es inevitable, el tiempo es lo único que no perdona, pero un legado como el de Miguel Angel Russo simplemente es eterno, y como apasionado de este hermoso deporte, lo único que puedo decir a la carrera de este gran hombre es gracias, y ojalá que en el próximo plano existencial puedas encontrar nuevamente la alegría de tener un esférico cerca.
