French Press Coffee

In October-November I went to see a friend who lives in Mexico 🇲🇽. The friend is a chef and has a great professional commitment to food. We have been friends since our university days, and I can't help but feel how quickly time flies. He was in the U.S. Army and came to Japan on leave for a short visit about a couple of weeks, but he became good friends with my mom (he could speak Japanese back then) and my mom often call him as "America's son." The friend gave us coffee beans as a gift. His wife's mother is from the Oaxaca region, where coffee beans are grown, and thry gave us coffee beans harvested there. When my sambo and I returned to Osaka, we decided to grind the beans and try them. However, my mom did not have a coffee maker in her house. My mother, who says, "Japanese people drink green tea 🎵," thought that coffee was something you had to pay for at a coffee shop and not something you had to drink at home. What we have at home are tea bags. So I made coffee by putting ground coffee beans into tea bags. Then, I sent a picture of it to my friend in Mexico. I sent a picture of it to my Mexican friend and said, "I'm back in Osaka and I'm drinking the coffee I got with my mom, Gracias!" I was immediately asked, "Why are you drinking it in a tea bag?" I was told that he was a professional chef and that I should drink the coffee properly and enjoy Oaxaca coffee! LOL! So true! So my sambo and I went to the recently opened Laraport Mall, bought a French press coffee maker, and gave it to my mom as a gift. It was a great cup of coffee, which I had bought in Vietnam when we, my mom, my sambo and I were there together. Once again, I told my friend that the Oaxaca coffee was the best I had ever tasted, and she was very happy. It made me want to go back to Mexico with my mom and my sambo 🎵.

10月～11月とメキシコ🇲🇽に住んでいる友人に会いに行った。その友人は料理人で食に関してすごいプロとしてのこだわりがある。学生時代からの友人で、もう20年を越えて友好関係を築けていることに時間の経過の早さを感じざるを得ない。その友人は米国陸軍に所属している時、休暇を使って日本に遊びに来てくれた。１ヶ月弱の短い期間ではあったけど、わたしのオカンとも仲良くなりよく「アメリカの息子」と友人のことを呼んでいる。その友人がコーヒー豆をわたし達にプレゼントしてくれた。友人の奥さんのお母さんがコーヒー豆の産地であるOaxaca地方の出身で、そこで収穫された豆をプレゼントしてくれた。大阪に帰ってきて、その豆を挽いて早速、飲んでみることにした。ところがオカンの家にはコーヒーメーカーがない。「日本人は緑茶やろ🎵」と言う母にはコーヒー☕は喫茶店でお金を出して買うもので、わざわざ家で飲むものではないといった感じのよだった。家にあるのは、ティーバック。そこで、挽いたコーヒー豆をティーバッグに入れてコーヒーを作ってみた。そして、その時の写真をメキシコの友人へ送って連絡した。「大阪に帰ってきて、オカンと一緒にもらったコーヒー飲んでます。Gracias!」すると、すかさず、「何でティーバッグで飲んでるの？？」とつっこみがあった。さすが相手はプロの料理人で、コーヒーもちゃんと飲んでOaxacaコーヒーを楽しんで欲しいと言ってきた。そこで、最近できたララポートのモールまでサンボと行ってきて、フレンチプレスコーヒーメーカーを買ってきてオカンにプレゼントした。昔、一緒に行ったベトナムで買ったコップにいれて飲むコーヒーはやっぱり、格別だった。改めて、友人にはOaxacaコーヒー、最高に美味しかったよと伝えたら、すごく喜んでくれた。また、メキシコにも行きたくなった🎵
