If you do not mind, and since you are a doctor I have a question. I have been seeing posts on another social media platform that says if you think you are having a heart attack, you should cough as hard as you can and keep coughing until help arrives. They say this could save your life. What are your thoughts on this?

I think they are talking about "Cough CPR".

I completed BLS (Basic Life Support) and ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) courses conducted by the American Heart Association. I didn't find any reference to this method. And, during my studies and in our textbooks, it's not mentioned either as one of the crucial steps. So, it's not in practice.

However, there is an effect of coughing on our hearts. It may terminate an event of rhythm disturbance. In the intensive care setting, with a monitor attached to the patient, a trained medical person can ask a conscious patient to cough repeatedly before proceeding to other definitive management for dysrhythmia. Its effect is not well established. It may or may not work.

So, without heart rhythm abnormalities, coughing won't reduce the excruciating chest pain.

Thank you for answering my question, there is so much misinformation going around social media but this one sounded like it might work. My husband has A-fib and I worry about his heart this is why I had this question.
