Ha comenzado la fase semifinal de la actual temporada de la UEFA Champions League y en la segunda jornada de encuentros de ida se enfrentaron en el estadio Metropolitano, el Atlético de Madrid y Arsenal FC; un encuentro que antes de realizarse había generado críticas y burlas a causa de la manera defensiva de ambos equipos y lo cual contrarresta al espectáculo goleador que ofrecieron tanto PSG como Bayern Múnich en la primera jornada de semifinales.

The semifinal stage of the current UEFA Champions League season has begun, and on the second day of the first-leg matches, Atlético Madrid and Arsenal FC faced off at the Metropolitano Stadium; a match that had drawn criticism and ridicule beforehand due to both teams’ defensive style of play, which stood in stark contrast to the goal-filled spectacle put on by both PSG and Bayern Munich on the first day of the semifinals.
A pesar de la obvia comparativa en las diferentes maneras de practicar el fútbol en los cuatro semifinalistas, los cuales por casualidad de este maravilloso deporte se emparejó a dos equipos netamente ofensivos en una eliminatoria y en la otra se deben enfrentar dos equipos que piensan en controlar el resultado usando un sistema defensivo, debo decir que revisando opiniones de aficionados en redes sociales, así como de la prensa deportiva antes de disputarse los encuentros, fue notorio que el cruce entre Atleti y Arsenal había generado más expectativas que el enfrentamiento entre parisinos y bávaros, aunque también es cierto que todo era porque existía un alto porcentaje de seguridad en que no se obtendria gran emoción al seguramente no haber una alta cantidad de goles y sí un posible y aburrido encuentro, pero a pesar de ser parcialmente cierta esa afirmación, la realidad es que el encuentro sí generó emoción, aunque la definición no estuvo tan acertada como en la primera semifinal.

Despite the obvious differences in how the four semifinalists play football—which, by the whims of this wonderful sport, have resulted in one matchup featuring two purely offensive teams and another pitting two teams against each other that aim to control the game using a defensive system— I must say that, looking at fan opinions on social media as well as in the sports press before the matches were played, it was clear that the matchup between Atleti and Arsenal had generated more anticipation than the clash between the Parisians and the Bavarians. However, it’s also true that this was largely because there was a high degree of certainty that the game wouldn’t be very exciting—since there likely wouldn’t be many goals and it might end up being a dull affair. but although that statement was partially true, the reality is that the match did generate excitement, even if the outcome wasn’t as decisive as in the first semifinal.
Así como sucedió en los cuartos de final, el equipo del Cholo debería enfrentar a un rival que tiene más prioridades que los colchoneros; eso posibilita a ese club seguir "El Plan" ideado por su entrenador, el cual es de hacer descansar al máximo de sus jugadores titulares en el torneo local y así poder enfrentar esta parte de la eliminatoria con menos minutos de juego que su rival. Hago acotación a ese factor porque en ese primer encuentro fue de suma importancia para lo que ofreció el encuentro, que en mi opinión fue dominado por el club local, que en la mayor parte del tiempo se defendió bien y hasta atacó mejor, pero con un nulo acierto contra la portería defensiva por Raya. El equipo de Simeone tuvo en la dupla de atacantes lo necesario para generar peligro suficiente para mantener ocupado al rival; tanto Julián Álvarez como Griezmann fueron suficientes para intentar ganar el encuentro, pero repito, el desacierto tanto del experimentado jugador francés como de la nueva adquisición, Lookman, quien falló claras ocasiones.

Just as in the quarterfinals, Cholo’s team is likely to face an opponent whose priorities differ from those of Atlético; this allows the club to stick to “The Plan” devised by its coach, which involves resting as many of its starting players as possible in the domestic league so they can enter this stage of the knockout round with fewer minutes played than their opponent. I mention this factor because it was crucial to the outcome of that first match, which, in my opinion, was dominated by the home team. For most of the game, they defended well and even attacked better, but they were unable to find the net against Raya’s defensive goal. Simeone’s team had what it needed in its attacking duo to create enough danger to keep the opponent on their toes; both Julián Álvarez and Griezmann were enough to try to win the match, but I repeat, the lack of finishing from both the experienced French player and the new signing, Lookman, who missed clear chances.
El equipo dirigido por Arteta se notó muy cansado; la lucha por el líderato en la Premier League está desgastando mental y físicamente a los Gunners y el enfrentar a un rival tan pesado como el Atleti posiblemente pueda dejarlos sin nada en la temporada, pero creo que asi como Simeone tiene un plan, también el Arsenal tenia uno y ese era no perder de visitante y para, este equipo tuvo que intentar controlar el juego para competir en un campo tam difícil, es por eso que visualizar una posición muy atrasada de Rice fue una "solución" para el esquema defensivo de los locales; creo que esa manera de jugar del Arsenal le propinó por momentos cierto control y el generar ocasiones en el ataque cuando tanto el ya citado Rice junto a Ødegaard, pudieron conectar con los extremos. Lamentablemente para el club londinense, el estado físico de sus jugadores no es el más óptimo para esta eliminatoria y, así como ocurrió en los primeros minutos tanto del primero como del segundo tiempo, los ingleses sucumbieron a la presión que realizó el rival, lo cual les hizo sufrir en la defensa, pero contaron con la necesaria suerte y creo que eso les hizo motivarse para nuevamente intentar controlar el encuentro, aunque lamentablemente para los visitantes, el ataque nunca fue solucionado, lo cual tan solo les hizo generar un solo chute hacia la arquería de Oblak.

But I think that just as Simeone had a plan, Arsenal had one too, and that was to avoid losing on the road. this team had to try to control the game to compete on such a difficult pitch; that’s why positioning Rice so deep was a “solution” for the home side’s defensive setup; I think that style of play gave Arsenal some control at times and created chances in attack when Rice, along with Ødegaard, were able to link up with the wingers. Unfortunately for the London club, their players’ physical condition isn’t optimal for this tie, and just as happened in the opening minutes of both halves, the English side succumbed to the pressure applied by their opponents, which caused them to struggle defensively, but they had the necessary luck, and I think that motivated them to try to take control of the match again. Unfortunately for the visitors, however, their attacking issues were never resolved, resulting in just a single shot on Oblak’s goal.
En el empate final a un gol por bando tuvo mucha influencia el arbitraje de Desmond Makkelie, con sus aciertos como en desaciertos. El árbitro principal como los encargados del VAR fueron protagonistas en las jugadas primeramente sancionadas como penalties; primeramente el penal a favor del Arsenal es una de esas jugadas que ocurren en otros encuentros y pasan completamente desapercibidas a la vista de los árbitros y que en esta ocasión sean reconocidas como falta, apesar de considerarla como un acierto, de igual manera deja en descubierto el grave problema con los árbitros; de igual manera sucede con el penal de White que terminó con el empate del Atleti, es otro acierto más que en otros juegos no son consideradas como una falta y en esa ocasión no solo deja en evidencia al arbitraje en el campo de juego, sino a los del VAR, pero el problema proviene en el tercer penal sancionado que era a favor del Arsenal en dónde el principal ya había sancionado penal y en ese caso el VAR no puede entrar para rearbitrar esa jugada, pero lamentablemente se generó otro caso más del mal arbitraje europeo que empaña (aún más) esta competición; no hay ninguna duda de que esa interpretación cambió radicalmente el panorama del encuentro y de verdad lamento que la paridad entre ambos equipos la mantuviera una mala decisión arbitral. El próximo martes se llevará a cabo el encuentro de vuelta y espero que no solamente los jugadores sean efectivos en el ataque, sino que se terminen de una vez por todas los muy malos arbitrajes que empañan esta competición.

Desmond Makkelie’s refereeing played a major role in the final 1-1 draw, with both his correct and incorrect calls. Both the head referee and the VAR officials played a key role in the plays initially ruled as penalties; first, the penalty awarded to Arsenal is one of those plays that occur in other matches and go completely unnoticed by the referees, and the fact that it was called a foul on this occasion—despite being considered a correct call—equally exposes the serious problem with refereeing; The same applies to White’s penalty, which led to Atleti’s equalizer; it is yet another correct call that in other games would not be considered a foul, and on this occasion, it not only highlights the refereeing on the field but also that of the VAR officials; but the problem stems from the third penalty awarded, which was in Arsenal’s favor, where the main referee had already called a penalty, and in that case, the VAR cannot intervene to overrule that call; unfortunately, this resulted in yet another instance of poor European refereeing that tarnishes (even further) this competition; There is no doubt that this interpretation radically changed the course of the match, and I truly regret that the parity between the two teams was maintained by a poor refereeing decision. The second leg will take place next Tuesday, and I hope that not only will the players be effective in attack, but that the very poor refereeing that tarnishes this competition will finally come to an end.
