Postcards from Thailand #52: I Want my MTV
Yes. Before your very eyes, an Android box with Netflix and all its other delights, running on a 30-year-old, old-skool telly!
No. Not mine. That would be my father in-law's.
So we went up for dinner as usual, a few days back and standing on the counter, where his nice flat screen had been the night before, was this dirty, grey, fat plastic box at the side of which was a box of wires, gadgets and connectors straight out of the ark.
He gave me the despairing look that only a son and father-in-law who have no common language could give, and I set to work.
I didn't even know if it would work but for the life of me, couldn't think of a practical reason why it wouldn't.
Of course there was no SCART and definitely no HDMI on the old TV, just having the usual old style photos. Both the plugs and sockets needed a good clean.
So to convert to phonos, I found an old 'upscaler' in the box. Were they used to improve the quality of the old 1st gen plasma flat screens? Anyway, it did the trick. It time-travelled the set-up from USB and HDMI in 2023 to phonos and CRTs of the mid-90s.
Anyway, although the picture was a little wuzzy, it was good enough for the old fella to watch the 6 o'clock news followed by his favourite nature program as he does every evening. He could even watch a bit of Netflix if he so desired.
As for me, I scored a few brownie points!
Oddly though, we have no idea what happened to, or even where his flat screen ended up. One day, we'll find out.

Oh damn! I didn't know we can turn box tv like that and has netflix. So, basically all I need is that Xiaomi TV Box and that's it? with the cables ofc. I might think something for my grandma, she's been complaining some channels are blurry and she needed to watch something new 😃 Thanks for the idea Nathen!
She'll need an internet connection of course and it wasn;t the greatest picture in the world but im not sure what his TV was like before but it was watchable and played everything the Mi Box could throw at it!

Very cheap so worth trying it. Shared Password on Netflix and Grandma is going to be very happy lol

At my in-law's house, the TV is still like that. The color on the display screen already changed, but it is still good and useful. My children spend a lot of time watching cartoons, but it's still working. I hope I can get extra money so I can buy a new one, but my father-in-law said he prefers it like this. There was a flat screen at home before, but durability is poor.

Theres still many of these here too Laica! Like you said, they last much longer than flat screens which seem to die after just a few years.

My body can’t cope with it as it can’t build up protection. (Auto immune disease) every time somebody that walks by has it or something like the flu or cold… I get it.
This was in a grocery shop. I know it and thought at the time… nooooo why would he come shopping as everybody could see he was sick. I just was in the wrong spot wrong time scenario and hoped it would be ok… but no.
We can’t hide from it either, as that’s no live.

Been a long time I saw those older generation TV box. It surely looks woozy and flustered, but having Netflix and co appear there, creates the impression that old tech can seamless work with 2023 tech. Such a delight. Wow.
Hey mate, hope you're as well as you can be right now. There are still quite a few of these old TVs in use here in Thailand still. Thais never throw anything away unless its totally dead and unfixable! Picture isn't great but its made to look worse by my phone camera shutter speed and the 50Hz picture refresh rate I think. Old fella was happy so thats all the matters I guess!
