Postcards from Thailand #54: Full English...ish

avatar

Yes. I know I promised to never again post about Thai food, but this is in Thailand but not Thai....

Anyway, I'd been looking for a local cafe that did a full English breakfast. There are plenty in the tourist areas of Lamai and Chaeweng but not in my more local area. However, 4 miles down the road in Nathorn, KOB opened one of 5 branches around the island and I'd always thought they were just coffee and cake, but no. They do hot food too, including their version of an English breakfast. Bonus points for HP sauce. Life is good!

Kob sits in front of the sea on the Nathorn one-way system so you get a good view across the sea to the mainland.

Well! How was it?

I'm giving it a 7 out of 10. Being picky, my personal preference would have been for tinned tomatoes and the beans were an inferior Aussie brand which weren't too bad. The sausage was listed as a Cumberland and it wasn't great and not well cooked so that was slightly dissapointing but what you can't see in the photo is the fried bread under the eggs which was a superb and authentic touch.

I was a happy bunny!

The best thing is, another place has opened 50m from Kob called 'Bar Baguette' which I'm told also do breakfasts so that will be for another day.

The annoying thing about all the coffee shops on the island, and in Thailand come to think about it, is that they are only open 8am while 6pm which leaves you with a choice of street food or 7/11.

Obviously, after eating that lot, I'd like to say I walked home and racked up the step count except of course, I didn't!

Have a brilliant weekend, everyone, and thanks for dropping by.

That actually looks very nice, plus you get normal bacon and crispy ones, though 4 pieces seems like a lot. I found when I was living in Taiwan, the most difficult thing to get were proper bangers. We found a place run by a few south African guys in the end that did very good ones, but they were quite expensive

It was a decent attempt but you're right about the sausages. The Germans are well catered for here with many types of German sausage sold, along with French Delis but we Brits are a bit hard done to!

There is a shop on the island that sells many imported English, well loved brands but the prices are ridiculous, as you can imagine. Im going to get another shock when I get back at Christmas!

I'm old. But I can adapt ;-)

Can’t say much a out the food itself, but I’m sure eating next to that sea view must be wonderful. If I lived in this area, I definitely would hang out here in the evenings to relax if they allowed it. I love sea and beach views, even though I’ve technically never been there.

Need to get more of those steps in, man. Would be a shame if aside cards, your inlaws beat you at sport too😂

Its relaxing and calming by the sea! Don't you have quite a long coastline in Ghana including Accra ? Are there resorts and places to visit?
LOL if drinking whisky was a sport, I'd have no chance but anything involving actual physical exercise, I'm always going to be a winner!
Just as an aside, all you need to be an English teacher in Thailand is a BA and a decent TOEIC score!....

Don't you have quite a long coastline in Ghana including Accra ?

Oh yes we do. But until last month, I’d never been in Accra before. I’ve spent all my life in the North where I was born, and my part of Ghana is absolute void of sea or any beaches. Closest to a sea we have here are large dams.

This picture here is the closest I’ve gotten to the sea. My sister’s husband took me on a ride by the sea when he noticed I talked about it almost all the time when I visited them in Accra last month.

Are there resorts and places to visit?

There are several! But like the sea and beaches, they’re all either in Accra or close it. I’ve seen some very beautiful resorts and tourist sites in travel blogs that I want to check out. But as of now, that’s the closest I’ve been to resorts.

I'd have no chance but anything involving actual physical exercise, I'm always going to be a winner!

Haha okay, big man.

Just as an aside, all you need to be an English teacher in Thailand is a BA and a decent TOEIC score!

Thanks for this information, man. I’d love to teach in Thailand! Thailand is a beautiful place with some of the most beautiful places to visit. I follow this Ghanaian that teaches in Thailand on social media and I just wish at his content. He’s even married to a Thai woman and they have a kid!

I’m sure I’ll score well if I took the TOEIC. But given that I have a Bsc In Biochemistry, I’m not sure I’ll fit for an English teacher. I’m more of a science Teacher. And if I ever get the opportunity to teach a science-related subject in Thailand, I’m taking it ASAP:)

(Edited)

If you get a formal teaching qualification to add to that Bsc, you'll be straight in as a candidate for the big international schools, and they pay top dollar! You'd be better qualified than 90% of the foreign 'teachers' here. It's seriously an achievable goal for you mate. Get a year or two of experience under your belt then go for it. Join the Thai teaching and expat groups and ask questions. :-)

Alright. I’ve been considering get a post-graduate diploma in education (pgde) in case something like this ever comes on my radar. Since I’ll be teaching Biology for the next 2 years, I think the experience part will be ticked.

Do you have any Thai teaching and expat groups you’d recommend I join?

You've been quiet!

Swinging by to day hey ho and happy NY!

And may there be less spiders and less travel for work for you in 2024, dear man.
