Postcards from Thailand #68: Rumble with the Jungle

avatar

It's got to be said that I've let the jungle around the back get a little out of hand.

I've been busy. It's been hot. I can't be arsed. Take your pick. I have enough trouble keeping the front looking reasonable, and no one goes round there anyway, so why bother? I actually like it 'au natural'. Of course, I once had great plans, but like on many other previous occasions, my expertise in the planning department didn't translate to expertise in the execution department.

I also have to consider my health and well-being. There's God knows what hiding amongst that long grass. I'm supporting the local wildlife. I'm saving the planet by not operating electrical and petrol driven machinery. I'm creating a natural and wild habitat for mother nature to thrive, free from man's attempts to takeover and control her.

Being honest, if I had enough money for a huge fuck-off digger and a couple of thousand tons of concrete, I'd build a car park, but i haven't. So nature reserve it is.

What's the point in banana trees when some thieving 🥧🔑 nicks your bananas?

Unfortunately for me, the wife has issued a decree, and so it's begun. And with hedgetrimmer and strimmer in hand, I've made a start, albeit a small one, down the side of the house so it looks from the front I've put in a little effort, she never goes round the back anyway, although with Rambutan season approaching, her mum is going to need access to her fruit trees. She will moan to the wife, the wife will moan at me... You can see where this is going!

Right, back to it. In an attempt to put a positive slant on all this, my 2 hour session did get me 13k + steps in, and steps are currently important now my new, and very expensive medical insurance is in force. Gamifying it for discounts has a tendency to focus and motivate, especially for 59 year old with ever increasing premiums!

Thanks for dropping by, and I hope everyone is having an amazing weekend.

More boring tree photos tomorrow!

My gardens, front and back, look much the same. I go out every so often and lop anything that looks like it might turn into a tree. It all started several years ago when I decided I wanted a meadow (cut twice a year) rather than a lawn and then I lost all control with travelling.

Wear big boots and gloves against the wild creatures and all the best!

Thank you! Everything soon gets out of control if you don't keep on top of the game.
I'm sure at some point, some of the grasses will die off but I can't ever work out the seasons here. It's just grow and chop all year round.
Hope all the renovations and work and everything else you have in your busy life aren't getting to much.
Take care

Ha, well I imagine gardening in the tropics woudl be tricky because that shit just grows right back! On the bright side, no stinging nettles...

This comment proves the gulf in intelligence between you and I because I thought that gardening in the tropics would easy haha With the heat and rain, I expected to be throwing seeds around willy nilly and stuff to sprout almost overnight.
In reality, stuff you don't want and didn't plant grows like crazy and stuff you do want, doesn't!

As one of Hive's top garden experts, if you ever want a bus man's holiday....!!

Thank-you and best wishes.

Hahaha yeah I'll pass... Any holiday in the tropics will involve a hammock I don't put up myself!!

Just a little trim with that grasses would be alright already, it's better keeping it more greenty😁

I'm with you on this. A little chop every now and then is fine. So many more fun things to do than getting into an endless and unwinnable battle with dear mother nature!

Lovely to meet you and thanks for dropping by.
Best wishes to you and your family.

It is important to take care of the garden in order not to have this kind of problems, also the images have a very cool natural touch.

That's clever of the bastards, putting in steps to gamify lowering the premiums!

Gardening is a bugger, I hope you have decent wire in that strimmer. I got extra tough stuff for mine and the difference in not having it break every ten seconds was amazing!!

You're spot on about the wires. I just treated myself to a cordless Dewalt for the front and their wire is epic. Around the back however, I still need the daddy. No wire!

As for the gamifying the premiums. I just answered that on LUT'S reply.

Are you back from holiday now or sneaking in a bit of crafty, holiday Hive time?

I was kinda laughing when I was reading the post and felt happy that you finally made some steps to post on Actifit. So, mother-in-law, the reason for this hard work? Maybe... Well, did you find any snakes or wildlife? Your backyard seems big, so I guess grass trimming won't hurt. Maybe it's time for you to plan something for the backyard, maybe a small garden space, or a budget-friendly sitting area?

Good afternoon :-)
Everything is always driven by the female chain of command! On this occasion, I didn't see a single snake or scorpion which is rare!

The land actually extends about 150m back so the plan is exactly as you suggested, an outdoor seating area, just trying to cultivate about the first 20m, and maybe an outdoor kitchen. The first job, though, is building a permanent carport and increasing the height of a retaining wall.

All in good time, I like think things through properly....that's different to procrastinating 😉

Thank you, as always, and have the best week you can.

Well, that's a lot of work indeed, so I can understand the reason for the delay. I won't say procrastination because it's actually a big project...

Everything is always driven by the female chain of command

Hehehe, that's for sure...

Its not a bad idea giving you discounts when you do more steps. I imagine you need a lot more than 10k a day to get anything worthwhile?

I get 10% off if I collect enough points by doing daily tasks like working out, drinking water, getting the steps etc but if I got a fitness watch, or ring, and let them access all my data, I could get upto 25% off. My policies are just shy of £2.5k this year so it's worth it, if you let them have the data.

Medical insurance is an expensive nightmare. Thank God for social health care in the UK!

If thieves are going to take away the bananas lol, then there's no need having it anyway. I think it's great to have shrubs and greens, but also good to mow them once in a while because of snakes and other creeping things
