She said, “One of these holidays, let’s go wander the old neighborhoods…” and today ended up being that day. She showed up, we headed out, and little by little he started steering the route: “Oh wow, my mom’s uncle used to live right here… my aunt’s place was two alleys up… my classmate lived over there — we’d go play at his house…”

We kept walking and walking and… most of the houses were gone, or chopped in half, or now rented out to Afghan families. And I could feel her swimming in this mix of nostalgia and heartbreak the whole time.

At the end she turned to me and went, “Well… now you officially know where every single member of my extended family used to live!”

گفت "یه روز تعطیلی بیا بریم کوچه‌های قدیمی شهر رو بگردیم..." و امروز همون روز بود. اومد با هم رفتیم و ذره ذره شروع کرد به مسیر دادن که "عه خونه‌ی عموی مامانم همین‌جاها بود... خونه‌ی عمه‌م دو تا کوچه جلوتر بود... خونه‌ی همکلاسی‌م که می‌رفتیم بازی می‌کردیم..."

هی رفتیم و رفتیم و... بیشترشون خراب شده بودن، نصف شده بودن، دست مهاجرهای افغان بودن، و گمونم حسابی حس خاطره‌ی توأم با حسرت تجربه می‌کرد. در پایان هم رو کرد به من و گفت "تو الان دیگه خونه‌ی تمام اقوام منو بلدی!"
