En la actualidad los jugadores de nivel medio y más, han interiorizado la maniobra y no por moda, sino por su lógica: su valor se establece en una pieza menor y, peón y medio, de modo que cuando el sacrificio se produce por pieza y un peón, desde el punto de vista material sólo sacrificamos medio peón y a cambio podemos conseguir compensaciones posicionales. De modo que, generalmente efectuamos este tipo de sacrificio a cambio de una compensación parcialmente material (un peón) y parcialmente posicional.

Estos factores externos al margen del material, son muy importantes. Entre las compensaciones más usuales podemos mencionar:

a) Obtención de un punto fuerte.

b) Obtención de peones pasados.

c) Debilitamiento del enroque enemigo.

d) Existiendo enroques opuestos, aprovechamiento de las columnas abiertas sobre el enroque rival.

e) Compensación por la gran diagonal o, compensación que brinda un fuerte alfil orientado hacia el enroque adversario y, que no tiene oposición.

Es importante apuntar, que el bando que sacrifica debe valorar en su justa medida que las torres adversarias no tengan actividad y, que no puedan demostrar superioridad sobre las piezas menores. Es decir, que no cuenten con columnas abiertas o, que tengan que adoptar posiciones defensivas.

d) If there are opposing castles, taking advantage of the open columns on the opponent's castle.

e) Compensation for the great diagonal or, compensation provided by a strong bishop oriented towards the opponent's castling, which has no opposition.

It is important to point out that the side that sacrifices must value in its fair measure that the opponent's rooks have no activity and that they cannot demonstrate superiority over the minor pieces. That is to say, that they do not have open columns or that they have to adopt defensive positions.
