Join me on a walk that kicks off my steps goal this year!

Our body is designed to survive, our mind to help it achieve that goal, and our routine to sabotage it.

That's right, we have in us a tool as powerful as versatile and we leave it hours and hours on a couch consuming calories to almost nothing more than breathing, and will always have a justification for doing so: because I work in an office, because I have to be all day at the computer, sitting all morning in class or the very recent version of teleworking, which abstracts us greatly at home and we do not balance productivity with well-being. The truth is that they are nothing more than excuses because the idea of making a considerable effort does not bother us, comfort is a vice.

We are all aware of the benefits of physical activity and leading a healthy lifestyle, the theory is everywhere, there is even excessive information on the subject and any of us has ever tried to be more responsible with your body, for many it is the never-ending story: I start, then I stop, I take it back, I regret it and so on to infinity or decline altogether; for others, it is usually a revelation, a total change of life and so wonderful that then try to sell it with such optimism and passion that it comes to generate some misgivings.

So we are still on the couch on weekends because it is rest day, we move to the table to sit down to eat, return to the routine of the week in front of the screen, sitting, and after finishing a long day, we take a nap for a while because of course, we are very tired. Hello sedentary friend, have you calculated how many hours you spend in a state of "rest" because if you try, the result will be alarming. Taking into account that at least 25% of your day you are sleeping you should be looking at how to compensate a little that lack of activity, it is true that we do things standing, but we are not cooking all day long or moving things (if this is your case then very well, this is not with you, you remain active) and if that adds about three hours, what is compared to the other fifteen remaining in which we are sitting ... wrong.

But it is not wrong just because it goes against what could help to improve our physical condition or because we do not want to stop being lazy, but because our body, which is designed to survive, enters into a state of storage, just in case "a tiger comes to eat me and I have to run, or I spend days without eating and starve, we better keep a little fat to be safe" something like that very roughly, there is no effort to make then there are no calories to be wasting; and this, apart from the aesthetic aspect, generates health problems that can become serious because the body also decreases its optimal functioning with the lack of activity and we become less efficient in keeping ourselves alive.

So if it is so bad, why is it so hard for us to start taking care of ourselves? There may be many reasons, but the most common is the belief that we have to make a great effort, a high physical activity to get results, and instead of trying to do what we can we prefer not to try because we are not interested in being bodybuilders, wrong again, moving a little more than we are used to is always going to be better than doing nothing at all, and our body appreciates it.

I speak from my experience because the habit of taking walks has done to me lots of good things. I started walking daily to try, not running, not doing sprints or training in a gym, just walking at a good pace for an hour and sometimes even two, and the results were quite good, and I do not mean weight loss, which also, because the body is activated and the metabolism is accelerated a little more so depending on how much you take care of your diet this happens, but what I find really important is the feeling of relief and lightness that you begin to experience, with the passing of the days the slight tiredness of "walking a lot" disappears, you adapt to the fact that it is something else you do every day and magically disappear that perennial discomfort in the back and knees, wonderful.

Sometimes I comment on these feelings and I am amused by the expressions on the faces of the people I talk to, something like they think it's great but that walking around without needing to do it makes no sense, and of course, it makes me laugh, how could it not be necessary to take care of themselves? Sometimes we don't stop and think about what is important, and our well being goes hand in hand with the physical and mental care we dedicate ourselves to, maybe it is not exactly the most motivating or interesting activity to do but it is a simple start and the only way to know if it will work for us or not is to try it, and there is some possibility that we like it and adopt it definitively, but how are we going to change our mind if we don't at least try?

Today I start to register my daily activity with @actifit to resume this good habit that I greatly diminished when the pandemic began, there were very strong restrictions for a while and then I developed a certain aversion to be away from home, when I could, I continued walking but only enough not to feel guilty and the truth is that I need it, because the pain and especially the heaviness, that mental fatigue and little desire to do things disperse with a walk a day, ideas are quickly clarified and I return home much more optimistic.

I did a familiar route to get back into the good habit, it is a nice trail that, although it is inside the city, borders a park located on the banks of the Ebro River, so it is quite cool and comforting. It is usually crowded although today, Wednesday in the middle of the week, there were few people, making it even more pleasant. Normally I listen to music or an audiobook while walking, but today I wanted to give myself with all my senses to the walk, to internalize and assimilate that this is a beginning and has to last in time, the mind is very complex, and if we are not aware of what we do it is very easy to lose our goal.
