Easter time [Eng][Esp] | My Actifit Report Card: March 31 2024

It would definitely be a sin to let these days of rest go by and not share with you one of the best things that this season brings us in these parts of the world: the torrijas.

These torrijas are from a coffee shop that has brought a lot of joy to the neighborhood of Parque Goya in Zaragoza since last year. A place that was much needed in that area and that radically differs from all the bars that surround it.

This dessert, made with bread soaked in milk, battered and fried, often with an excess of oil, is one of the quintessential desserts of the Spanish Semana Santa (Holy Week). Chunky and spongy, in this case, the torrijas of La Gayeta meet the expectations of the traditional craving. It is a basic and unpretentious version to not let days go by without enjoying one.

Sin duda sería un pecado dejar pasar estos días de asueto sin compartirles por aquí, una de las mejores cosas que nos trae esta temporadas en estos lados del mundo: las torrijas.

Estas torrijas son de una cafetería que le ha dado mucha vida al barrio de Parque Goya en Zaragoza desde el año pasado. Un lugar que hacía mucha falta en esa zona y que se deferencia radicalmente de todos los bares que la rodean.

Este postre elaborado a base de pan empapado en leche, rebosado y frito, que muchas veces puede llegar a tener aceite en exceso, es uno de los postres por excelencia en la Semana Santa española. Gorditas y esponjosas, en este caso, las torrijas de La Gayeta cumplen las expectativas del tradicional antojo. Es una versión básica y sin pretensiones para no dejar pasar los días sin comerse una.

Naturally, on these days when some dedicate themselves to honoring their devotion and others to resting from the exhausting routine, some of us allowed ourselves to take advantage of both situations and clear our minds by enjoying a bit of the local culture.

I am not an expert on religion, but we had family visiting the city, so I did my best just to let us catch some of the traditional events going on.

March is a wonderful month that always keeps me equal parts busy and sick. It must have something to do with the change of season and the accompanying rains, but in spite of this sickness I caught the energy of our visitors to take a long walk and enjoy the changing weather of the city.

Between some sunshine, gray clouds and intermittent drizzle, I managed to head for a place that I really like to eat, especially during these days when there are so many people in the city, because it is a spacious restaurant where, most of the time, you can secure a reservation at short notice.

I will not go into details about the gastronomy, but I will leave a small sample of what our experience was like, which I will surely talk about more precisely in a few days, so that there is a clear evidence of how good it is to eat at Molino de San Lázaro, one of my favorites in the city.

Por supuesto, estos día en que algunos se dedican a honrar su devoción y otros a descansar de la agotadora rutina, algunos nos permitimos aprovechar un poco ambas situaciones y despejar la mente disfrutando un poco de la cultura local.

No soy una experta en religión, pero teníamos visita familiar en la ciudad, así que hice lo posible para que pudiéramos observar algunos de los eventos tradicionales que se llevaban a cabo.

Marzo es un mes maravilloso que siempre me mantiene ocupada y enferma a partes iguales. Algo tendrá que ver el cambio de estación y las lluvias que le acompañan, pero a pesar de esto enferma me contagie de la energía de nuestros visitantes para dar un largo paseo y disfrutar del cambiante clima de la ciudad.

Entre algunos rayos de sol, nubes grises y llovizna intermitente, logré encaminar el paseo a un lugar que me gusta muchísimo para comer, sobre todo durante estos días en que hay tanta gente en la ciudad, porque es un restaurante espacioso en el que, la mayor parte de las veces, se puede asegurar una reserva con poco tiempo.

No entraré en detalles sobre la gastronomía, pero sí dejaré una pequeña muestra de lo que fue nuestra experiencia, de la que seguramente hablaré con más precisión dentro de unos días, para que haya constancia de lo bien que se come en el Molino de San Lázaro, de mis favoritos en la ciudad.

One of the best things about this restaurant is that its terrace overlooks the riverbank, so after lunch, it is almost a must to follow the Ebro River path and enjoy the Basilica del Pilar views that this part of the path offers.

These days there is a flood alert, not exactly here, but one can appreciate the speed at which the river's current comes and how high it is. At this time of year the green color it exhibits is a beautiful contrast with the Stone Bridge and, although the light was not magnificent due to the cloudy sky, the photos do justice to how beautiful it looks when seen in person.

I think it's easy to see how magnificent this place is and how imposing it always looks, I couldn't help but think that these weather conditions give a medieval movie look to the tour and make it more suitable to tell some stories.

Una de las mejores cosas que tiene este restaurante es que su terraza da directamente a la ribera, así que después de comer es casi una necesidad seguir el sendero a lo largo del Río Ebro y disfrutar de las vistas de la Basílica del Pilar que ofrece esa parte del sendero.

Estos días hay alerta por crecidas, no exactamente aquí, pero se puede apreciar la fuerza con la que viene la corriente del río y lo alto que está. En esta época el color verde que exhibe resulta en un contraste hermoso con el Puente de piedra y, a pesar de que la luz no era magnifica por el cielo nublado, las fotos lancen justicia a lo bonito que se ve en directo.

Creo que se puede ver lo magnifico que es este lugar y lo imponente que luce siempre, no pude evitar pensar que estas condiciones climáticas le imprimen un aspecto de película medieval al recorrido y resulta más acorde para contar algunas historias.

Spring came to us with rain and thunder, making its vivid colors more noticeable against the gray background of the landscape. I don't deny it, there are rays of sunshine that sneak through and then there are days with high temperatures and others with temperatures that make me think that I have imagined the good weather of the previous day. So better to enjoy each one not expecting the next one to be the same, and be ready to be surprised. Such stress haha.

I think that despite taking a few days off in all aspects, it is not superfluous to share a little of what has been this weekend, after all, writing this blog always feels like a way to clear my mind and recall moments that, although brief and ordinary, tend to inspire me to go step by step on this road, step by step, adding kilometers that end up becoming these activity reports full of anecdotes.

La primavera nos llegó con lluvias y truenos, haciendo mas notable sus vivos colores con ese fondo gris del paisaje. No lo niego, hay rayos de sol que se cuelan por ahí y luego hay días con temperaturas altas y otros con unas que me hacen pensar que me he imaginado el buen clima del día anterior. Así que mejor disfrutar de cada uno sin esperar que el siguiente sea igual, abiertos a la sorpresa. Qué tensión jaja.

Creo que a pesar de tomarme unos días de descanso en todos los aspectos, no está de más compartir un poco de lo que ha sido este fin de semana, a final de cuentas, escribir este blog siempre se siente como una forma de despejar mi mente y revivir momentos que, aunque sean breves y corrientes, suelen motivarme a ir paso a paso en este camino, paso a paso, sumando kilómetros que terminan convirtiéndose en estos reportes de actividad llenos de anécdotas.
