Hoy salí temprano a hacer compras como cada domingo. Durante el trayecto tengo que pasar por una cancha de Basketball al aire libre. Allí, los fines de semana un grupo de adultos juegan Basket, ellos se hacen llamar “Los Veteranos”. La mayoría sobrepasa los 55 años de edad, algunos fueron deportistas, otros, verdaderos veteranos de la guerra de Angola, epopeya en la que se enroló la Revolución Cubana, en sus ansias de probar el nuevo arsenal Soviético.

La cosa es que me detuve un rato a disfrutar el partido de aquellos veteranos, y a admirar su perseverancia y energía, a pesar de la edad, las viejas heridas y esta isla que insiste en prolongarles la batalla.

No hice buenas fotos, lo sé. Los cubanos posan para las cámaras de los extranjeros, pero para las de sus compatriotas solo hay interrogantes y hasta malas miradas.

I went out early today to do some shopping like every Sunday. I have to pass by an outdoor basketball court on the way. There, on weekends, a group of adults play basketball; they call themselves "The Veterans". Most of them are over 55 years old. Some were athletes, others were true veterans of the Angolan War, a battle in which the Cuban Revolution enrolled, in their eagerness to test the new Soviet arsenal.

The thing is that I stopped for a while to enjoy the game of those veterans, and to admire their perseverance and energy, despite age, old wounds, and this island that insists on prolonging the battle for them.

I didn't do good photos, I know. Cubans pose for the cameras of foreigners, but for those of their compatriots, there are only questions and even bad looks.
