Glitches on Strava can be a lot of fun and/or annoying

By "fun" I mean frustrating but also amusing at the same time. I don't know how many times I went on a run down a path that I have done many times before only to finish and have my readout tell me that I was significantly slower than my usual time. Thankfully, Strava doesn't try to motivate you to do better or even worse, they don't berate you for being a lazy shit either.

At least in the area that I'm dealing with I think there are a lot of things that could be interfering with my GPS signal such as very tall buildings that contain a ton of metal and of course, the thousands of Wi-Fi signals that are all along my route.

Strava is a pretty wonderful app because it is free for most of the aspects of it and at least from my point of view, I don't see any particularly good reason why anyone would pay to upgrade. It still tracks all of your activities provided you remember to record them so the advanced features, I can't really see much of a point in having them.

The basic package which is free is more than enough but sometimes you get some pretty whacky results like this

I am about a 6-7 minute per km runner if I am just casually tooling about on my runs. I don't generally try to improve on my times on purpose and honestly, I am in this for the duration of exercise rather than trying to break any PB's. There is one thing that I am quite certain of though. I am not capable of a 1:35 km. I also did not run the just over 3 minute km or the under 3min km at the start of this either.

The ones that are just barely under 6 minutes and the trailing ones that are 7.5 are probably accurate but the others are probably all wrong. I don't even think the overall distance is very close to correct because if we look at the map that it draws, there are these very fast straight lines that show me jumping over multiple blocks and then jumping back in a few seconds.

To me it seems as though this should be caught because unless you are Spiderman or The Incredible Hulk, nobody is capable of doing this either. I would love it if mama speed was something that I could call upon at certain times but I guess this is what we can expect to get from an app that is free. I think that it would probably be better if these things did get flagged because if I were the type of person that actually was chasing personal bests these results would totally throw off all of the records I have already kept up to this point.

it actually did record several PB's for me in this run and none of them are actually true. The downside of this side of Strava is that the only way I can rectify this situation is to either delete the entire entry, or go through the rather annoying process of manually editing the run. I am not going to do either one of these things but if someone was more concerned about their results being 100% accurate I can see this being a very annoying feature of the app.

I still find it amusing from time to time and luckily this doesn't happen all that frequently. I got it for free just like most everyone else that uses it so I guess I should just embrace the fact that it isn't going to be perfect.

Strava with my Garmin watch has been pretty reliable so far. I used to use Endomondo on my phone and had a few glitches with that. It would record crazy speeds at times. In Strava you can trim the start and end of a run. I have seen people keep recording after they got in the car to go home. They have some other options to fix runs, but I have not had to use them so far. They need to make it easy to cancel fake achievements.

Wishing you a happy new year.

thanks buddy. Yeah, I'm aware of these edit features and maybe I am just not technically inclined but I don't think there is a way to trim the middle of a run without affecting either end of it. I guess it really isn't that important to me. When this happens I just end up getting rid of most or all of the run because I don't want bogus PB's.

A friend of mine once got a GPS signal on a short haul flight and his Strava numbers were insane. He ran more than a km per second. It was amazing.

I guess if it's well messed up you just have to scrap the stats on that run. They just need to make it easy to do as it's bound to happen.

I have seen some whacky results in the past, but like you I average around 6minutes per km which is steady. The 4 minute per km is never going to happen. I noticed on a walking app a few years ago I walked close to 25km whilst doing Christmas shopping in London and this was sadly genuine. The problem was having to go back to the hotel to drop stuff I had bought each time and only after I had finished realised how many hours I was on the go.

That's pretty wild that you were able to do that many km's just by shopping. I bet your legs were beat by the end of that.
