Bayern Munich put giant-slaying Benfica to the sword with a resounding 5-2 victory in Munich. It was a remarkable moment for Robert Lewandowski who celebrated his 100th Champions League appearance with a wonderful hat-trick despite missing a penalty in the game. It was a 5-star performance from Bayern Munich who took a strong step towards qualifying from the group.

Lewandowski scored his hat-trick and Gnabry with Sane added gloss to the scoreline. Benfica got consolation goals through Morato and Nunez. With Barcelona's 1-0 win against Dynamo Kiev, Barcelona leapt to 2nd on the group just behind Bayern Munich.

Bayern got the first goal in the 26th minute after a well-worked effort on the right-hand side of the box by Coman. He found Lewandowski with a perfect cross and he wasted no time in heading the ball into the back of the net to register the first of his 3 goals on the night.

Bayern got 2 goals in 5 minutes after Kimmich's lofted pass found Lewandowski inside the box and he found Gnabry with a clever touch. Gnabry produced a backheel finish into the back of the net in the 31st minute. Benfica wouldn't just roll over without a fight and in the 38th minute, Morato got on the end of a lovely cross into the box and headed the ball into the back of the net to half the deficit.

In the 45th minute, Kimmich found Goretzka in the box and he managed to draw a handball from Lucas Veríssimo which the referee gave after a VAR check. Lewandowski stepped up to take it and his tame shot was easily gathered by the goalkeeper to keep the score at 2-1.

Bayern Munich started the second half on the front foot again and in the 49th minute, Sane scored with a beautiful half volley shot after being found with a headed pass from Davies to increase Bayern Munich's lead by 2 goals.

Lewandowski made up for his penalty miss in the 61st minute when Sane was found with a clever pass and unselfishly managed to squeeze the pass onto the path of Lewandowski who raced on goal and dunk the ball over the goalkeeper into the back of the net.

Benfica halved the deficit to 4-2 in the 74th minute when João Mario laid the pass for Nunez and his effort managed to get under Manuel Neuer as it rolled into the back of the net. Lewandowski got his hat-trick in the 84th minute after a long pass from Manuel Neuer right from the back found him and he produced another lobbed effort to seal the win for Bayern.

It was a convincing performance from Bayern Munich and no one can doubt the win.
