Benzema on Fire.

Karim Benzema has been in fine form for Real Madrid especially in the UEFA Champions League this term and his brace helped Real Madrid get a step closer to qualifying for the knock out round. After an embarrassing defeat at the hands of Sheriff, Real Madrid hasn't looked back as they kept on grinding out the result.

They are first in the group and Shakhtar are languishing in 4th position. Real Madrid travelled to Ukraine the last time out and won Shakhtar Donetsk on their turf with a comprehensive 5-0 victory but this time around they edged the Ukrainian by 2 goals to 1. Benzema got the brace and Fernando got on the score sheet for the visitors.

Real Madrid produced a brilliant interplay which involved lovely exchanges between Lucas Vasquez and Modric and this led Modric into a wonderful position inside the box with the goalkeeper at his mercy but his shot lacked precision as he shot straight at the goalkeeper who managed to push the ball for a corner kick in the 5th minute. Taking nothing from the goalkeeper, it was a good save from a close range as he managed to get his hand to the ball.

Benzema got Real Madrid's 1,000th European goal with the easiest of tap-in after a terrible and heavy pass from the goalkeeper was pounced on by Vinicius Jnr and he unselfishly passed the ball to Benzema who just had to tap the ball into the net in the 14th minute.

Mykhaylo Mudryk cleverly found Fernando with a deft touch inside the box in the 32nd minute and he was unable to find the back of the net from that close range after Alaba blocked him off.

Shakhtar Donetsk got themselves level in the 39th minute after a lofted and clever pass found Patrick in the box and with a chested pass found Fernando who blasted the ball into the roof of the net to get Shakhtar's first-ever goal in this season's Champions League. Fernando should have doubled his lead just before the halftime whistle but for the expertise of Courtois who brilliantly saved the shot.

Casemiro and Vinicius Jnr combined on the edge of the box before Vinicius Jnr set up Benzema in the box yet again and Benzema finished off the effort coolly in the 61st minute.

Shakhtar just couldn't finish off as a brilliant run and effort by Dodô was left unattended to as his low delivery into the box missed everyone in the 70th minute. In the 75th minute as well, Taras Stepanenko watched as his shot missed narrowly as it flew over the crossbar from long range. Benzema could have gotten his hat-trick too in the 79th minute after a beautiful chested control and his shot after the turn flew over the bar as well.

Benzema's two goals were enough to give Real Madrid the 3 points needed to stay top of the group.
