Ronda de dieciseisavos de final en la EFL Cup; la Copa de la Liga venía cargada de sorpresas en esta su tercera ronda que llega justo antes del parón Mundialista; Qatar está a la vuelta de la esquina pero antes de ello, en Inglaterra no para el frenesí y habría de jugarse esta jornada de la Carabao Cup y la decimosexta jornada de la Premier League el fin de semana.
La Copa del Mundo comienza en breves mientras que la Copa de la Liga Inglesa ha traído sorpresas. Cayó el Tottenham ante el Nottingham Forest, sucumbió también el Brentford en penales ante el Gillingham de tercera división, el Liverpool sufrió de más ante el Derby County aunque logró la clasificación desde los once pasos y el Arsenal de Mikel Arteta ha caído eliminado ante el Brighton que está firmando una grandiosa campaña.
Pero el partido que acaparaba los reflectores de la jornada copera en Inglaterra era, sin lugar a dudas, el choque entre el Manchester City de Pep Guardiola y el Chelsea de Graham Potter en el Etihad Stadium. Un choque de trenes de la Premier League que habría de dejar a un grande muy pronto en el camino.
Round of 32 in the EFL Cup; the League Cup was full of surprises in its third round which comes just before the World Cup break; Qatar is just around the corner but before that, in England the frenzy does not stop and the Carabao Cup matchday together with the sixteenth matchday of the Premier League should be played.

Las jornadas de Copa en Inglaterra suelen traernos onces con varias modificaciones en los equipos de la élite y esta, con el Mundial casi por arrancar no iba a ser la excepción. El Chelsea de Potter formó con Edouard Mendy bajo palos; línea de tres en defensa, Koulibaly flanqueado por Chalobah y Cucurella; con dos laterales adelantados en función de carrileros en los nombres del juvenil Lewis Hall y de Loftus-Cheek que buscaban copar el centro del campo con Zakaria y Kovacic para dejar en labores ofensivas a Pulisic y Ziyech por los costados y Armando Broja en punta.
Guardiola por su parte alineó con un dibujo muy suyo, 4-2-3-1 buscando facilitar la gustada labor de posesión en los suyos. Stefan Ortega era el elegido para resguardar el arco y, para protegerlo a él, Días y Laporte en la central acompañados por Lewis y Gómez en los costados. Rodri y Gündogan como anclas del equipo y por delante de ellos Mahrez y Greallish por los costados con Palmer haciendo las labores de enganche por el centro; mientras que en la punta arrancaba Julián Álvarez.
Estos dos equipos aún no se vieron las caras por Premier League en esta temporada y en la campaña anterior fue el Manchester City quien se impuso en ambos choques por idéntico marcador 1-0 tanto en el Etihad como en Stamford Bridge; previo a dichos encuentros ligueros el otro antecedente a considerar es la final de la UEFA Champions League que también terminó por 1-0 pero en dicha ocasión a favor del conjunto londinense.

Potter's Chelsea lined up with Edouard Mendy in goal; a line of three in defence, Koulibaly flanked by Chalobah and Cucurella; with two full-backs playing as wing-backs in the names of the young Lewis Hall and Loftus-Cheek who looked to fill the midfield with Zakaria and Kovacic to leave Pulisic and Ziyech in attack on the flanks and Armando Broja up front.
Guardiola, for his part, lined up with his own 4-2-3-1 formation, looking to facilitate his side's possession. Stefan Ortega was chosen to guard the goal and, to protect him, Dias and Laporte in the centre accompanied by Lewis and Gomez on the flanks. Rodri and Gündogan anchored the team and ahead of them Mahrez and Greallish on the flanks with Palmer playing in the centre, while Julian Alvarez started up front.
The two sides have yet to meet in the Premier League this season and in the previous campaign it was Manchester City who won both games by identical 1-0 scorelines at both the Etihad and Stamford Bridge; prior to those league fixtures the other precedent to consider is the UEFA Champions League final which also ended 1-0 but on that occasion in favour of the Londoners.
Es inevitable repasar las palabras de Graham Potter previo al choque ante el conjunto Cityzen, aún más si consideramos el tremendo triunfo copero del Brighton -su ex equipo- ante el Arsenal de Arteta. El hoy entrenador del Chelsea dijo: “Podría haberme quedado tranquilo en Brighton, pero he venido al Chelsea”, como presagiando problemas en la visita a Manchester.
Los visto en la noche del Etihad fue un correcalles durante la primera mitad, ambos intentaron buscar el juego con sus armas pero los balones no querían entrar. Quizá el City fuera más insistente sobre el arco de Mendy, en gran medida por su mayor posesión de pelota pero las más claras del primer lapso estuvieron en los pies del Chelsea que no halló el gol por mediación de un gran Stefan Ortega -que a la postre se convertiría en el MVP de la noche-.
Llegó el segundo tiempo y con él más emociones que en esta ocasión sí vendrían acompañadas por gritos de gol. El City continuaba con su dominio de pelota y su asedio en el campo rival y el juvenil Hall parecía ser el único en el Chelsea en proponer algo diferente al guion que se desarrollaba en el libreto de los visitantes.

On the night at the Etihad, the first half was a maelstrom, with both sides trying to play with their weapons but the balls just wouldn't go in. Perhaps City were more insistent on Mendy's goal, largely due to their greater possession but the clearest clearings of the first half were at the feet of Chelsea who failed to find the net through a great Stefan Ortega -who would eventually become the MVP of the night-.
The second half arrived and with it came more excitement, this time accompanied by shouts for a goal. City continued to dominate the ball and lay siege to their opponents' half and the young Hall seemed to be the only Chelsea player to come up with something different to the visitors' script.

Vendrían 5 minutos de gracia absoluta para el conjunto de Guardiola que comenzaron al 53’, pelota parada en la media luna del área, posición inmejorable para dos cobradores como Greallish y Mahrez, fue el argelino quien ejecutó y lo hizo con maestría absoluta para dejar quieto al arquero Mendy y decretar el 1-0 del cuadro local.
Y al minuto 58’ nuevamente Mahrez a escena para matar dentro el área un gran cruce de Julián Álvarez, exquisito control del argelino a la pelota del argentino, enganche sobre Cucurella y un disparo que Mendy escupiría para que llegase Julián a empujar el esférico y con ello pusiera el 2-0 definitivo para los de Guardiola no porque el Chelsea no lo haya buscado sino porque Ortega agigantó su figura bajo los palos.
Avanzó el Manchester City que sumó su tercera victoria al hilo ante los Blues. En el último escollo liguero antes de la Copa del Mundo, los Cityzen de Guardiola reciben al Brentford mientras que los Blues de Potter tendrán la compleja visita al Newcastle en St. James’ Park.
Five minutes of absolute grace for Guardiola's side began in the 53rd minute, a set piece in the half moon of the box, an unbeatable position for two takers like Greallish and Mahrez, it was the Algerian who took the ball and did it with absolute mastery to leave goalkeeper Mendy still and make it 1-0 for the home side.
And in the 58th minute Mahrez was again on the scene to kill inside the box a great cross from Julián Álvarez, exquisite control of the Algerian to the Argentine's ball, a hook over Cucurella and a shot that Mendy would spit out for Julián to push the ball and thus put the definitive 2-0 for Guardiola's team, not because Chelsea had not looked for it but because Ortega made his figure bigger and bigger on goal.
Manchester City went on to record their third win in a row over the Blues. In the final league fixture before the World Cup, Guardiola's Cityzen host Brentford while Potter's Blues have a tricky trip to Newcastle at St James' Park.

Excelente performans del equipo dirigido por Pep Guardiola, la verdad nos dejó la sensación de que cada jugador es fundamental en cada presentación del equipo. Mahrez con un talento inmenso, por gusto uno de los mejores jugadores del continente africano, Ortega con una de sus primeras salidas de ensueño justo frente al siempre complicado Chelsea. Ha sido un partido muy bueno por parte de la fuerza B de los Cityzen; aunque hemos de dar crédito al Chelsea que, con sus herramientas, complicó bastante la vida los de Guardiola. Creo que este partido le sirvió a Guardiola para darse cuenta del tamaño de plantilla que tiene, hasta los suplentes de los suplentes tienen una calidad tremenda, quiero sin duda alguna destacar a Ortega, después de una temporada consagratoria donde fue uno de los mejores porteros de la Bundesliga, decidió aceptar ser suplente de Ederson en Manchester City y ante Chelsea, demostró que la falta de minutos no le ha disminuido ni un poco su calidad con los guantes, no me extrañaría que acabe siendo el preferido de Pep Guardiola.

Total y completamente de acuerdo contigo, hermano; no sé si para darse cuenta del tamaño de su plantilla pero sí para comprender los alcances de muchos de sus habituales suplentes secundarios. Lo de Ortega ha sido fundamental para que el juego no se fuera a la definición por penaltis; no sé si será el preferido por Guardiola pronto, porque Ederson es mucho Ederson, pero carajo ¿a quién no le gustaría tener un par de porteros de esa talla? ¡Tremendo!
