Toca hablar de ese partido que muchos ningunean y que, a priori, nadie quiere disputar; un encuentro al que Hualid Regragui definió como “la falsa final” un duelo de absoluta consolación para el par de semifinalistas que cayeron en la búsqueda del boleto a la soñada final de la Copa del Mundo. Marruecos y Croacia han hecho historia, eso es irrefutable y, aconteciere lo que aconteciere en el Estadio Internacional de Khalifa, tanto balcánicos como magrebíes habrían de irse de Qatar con la satisfacción de haber trascendido.
Los Leones del Atlas han firmado una historia de deliciosa anarquía, fueron dejando en el camino a selecciones de mucha mayor prosapia y tradición y en el mismo sendero fueron escribiendo una historia maravillosa que, pasado el tiempo, habrán de recordar con agrado y cierto deje de nostalgia; el conjunto del Magreb es, ni más ni menos que la primera selección africana -y árabe- en haber jugado la instancia de semifinales de una Copa del Mundo. Marruecos se va de Qatar habiendo sembrado la semilla de la esperanza en tiempos mucho mejores para el fútbol africano.

Croacia, por su parte, tras haber sorprendido al Mundo en Rusia de la mano de Zlatko Dalic, fue fiel a su esencia y filosofía, volvió a llevar dos partidos de eliminación directa al alargue máximo para definirlos en tandas desde el manchón, eliminaron en cuartos de final a la todopoderosa pentacampeona del Mundo y su Jogo Bonito y ni siquiera la derrota ante Argentina podrá opacar el logro de haber trascendido en dos Copas del Mundo consecutivas para lograr colgarse una medalla cuando nadie les consideraba para ello.
En Khalifa presenciamos, lo que habrá podido ser el último encuentro Mundialista de un genio del centro del campo; el tiempo no puede congelarse, y por desgracia el criogenizar a Luka Modric es igual de imposible. Modric es un futbolista exquisito y el verle guiar el fútbol de su selección es gozar; es imposible no esperarlo todo de Modric, sobre todo en una Croacia a la que le falta una figura letal en el frente de ataque, de Lukita se espera hasta ese gol que brinde la victoria a los suyos, no llegó el tanto, pero sí su fulgurante clase para generar el fútbol de los suyos.

Solo dos minutos tardó el conjunto del Magreb en dar respuesta al golpe encajado; los Leones del Atlas mostraron las garras, también por la vía de la pelota detenida con un centro de Hakim Ziyech que se envenenó tras el desvío de Lovro Majer, en total libertad quedó Achraf Dari para empujar la pelota ante Livakovic que nada pudo hacer para evitar la caída de su valla. 1-1 antes de cumplir 10 minutos de juego; una cosa impensada si tomamos en cuenta la calidad de ambos equipos en el arte defensivo.

Y la paridad hubo de desatascarse en la recta final de la primera mitad, otra vez Croacia al abordaje, Livaja abrió el esférico hacia Mislav Orsic que no tuvo reparo en inventarse una joya de definición, una delicatessen absoluta para romper el empate en favor de los suyos y soñar con volver a conquistar una presea Mundialista tras la gesta de hace 4 años en Rusia.
Croacia se sintió cómoda la mayoría del tiempo en la segunda mitad con Modric controlando, desde la sala de mandos, el ritmo de un juego que fue muy distinto al de la primera parte, menos vistoso, más plagado de imprecisiones y en el que Marruecos sólo supo inquietar a los croatas en un mano a mano de En Nesyri y Livakovic, sabrá Dios como lo falló el delantero africano y como terminó deteniendo aquello el guardameta balcánico. Una nueva gran gesta de un país que no supera los 4 millones de almas, Croacia ha conquistado su tercer podio Mundialista en tan solo 31 años de historia como nación; en cuanto a Marruecos, todo honor y reconocimiento, toda gratitud por los inolvidables pasajes que serán indelebles en la arena del desierto.
And parity had to be broken in the final stretch of the first half, with Croatia again on the attack, Livaja opened the ball to Mislav Orsic who had no qualms about inventing a gem of a finish, an absolute delicacy to break the deadlock in favour of his team and dream of winning a World Cup trophy again after the feat of four years ago in Russia.
Croatia felt comfortable most of the time in the second half with Modric controlling, from the control room, the rhythm of a game that was very different from the first half, less showy, more plagued by inaccuracies and in which Morocco only managed to trouble the Croatians in a one-on-one between En Nesyri and Livakovic, God knows how the African striker missed it and how the Balkan goalkeeper ended up stopping it. A new great feat for a country with no more than 4 million souls, Croatia has conquered its third World Cup podium in only 31 years of history as a nation; as for Morocco, all honour and recognition, all gratitude for the unforgettable passages that will be indelible in the desert sand.
