¿Cruz Azul ganando una Copa Intercontinental al Manchester United? Podría ser la hazaña más grande de un club mexicano a nivel internacional, equiparable a la Copa Intercontinental que Boca Juniors conquistó ante el Real Madrid.

Cuenta la leyenda que, allá por 1969, Cruz Azul puso en alto el nombre de México al ganarle la Copa Intercontinental UEFA-CONCACAF al Manchester United. Pero, ¿En realidad sucedió dicho encuentro o se trata de un invento más de esos que inundan internet?
Legend has it that, back in 1969, Cruz Azul put Mexico's name on a high note by winning the UEFA-CONCACAF Intercontinental Cup against Manchester United. But did the match actually happen or is it just another one of those inventions that flood the internet?
Relatos en diferentes medios, cuentan que, el título se jugó a ida y vuelta y que, además, el rival que debía haber enfrentado al Cruz Azul era el AC Milán, campeón reinante de la Copa de Europa; pero ante la negativa ‘neroazurri’ de disputar el trofeo en partidos de ida y vuelta, fue el Manchester United a quien la UEFA envío a disputar el título.
Reports in different media say that the title was played over two legs and that, in addition, the opponent Cruz Azul should have faced was AC Milan, reigning European Cup champions; but given the 'Neroazurri's' refusal to play the trophy over two legs, it was Manchester United who UEFA sent to dispute the title.
La leyenda detalla que el primer juego tuvo lugar en el Estadio Azteca y para sorpresa de muchos el Cruz Azul derrotó por marcador de 3-0 al Manchester United de Sir Bobby Charlton y George Best, y que los tantos corrieron a cargo de Fernando Bustos, Octavio “Centavo” Muciño y Rafael Hernández Pat. ¡Vaya proeza celeste!
Legend states that the first game took place at the Estadio Azteca and to the surprise of many, Cruz Azul defeated Sir Bobby Charlton and George Best's Manchester United 3-0, with Fernando Bustos, Octavio "Centavo" Muciño and Rafael Hernández Pat scoring the goals. Quite a heroic feat by the "Celeste"!
El encuentro de vuelta se jugó en otro templo del futbol, Old Trafford, donde el Manchester United se adelantó en el marcador con gol de Bobby Charlton para acortar distancias, pero de nueva cuenta aparecería “el Centavo” Muciño para marcar el empate en el Teatro de los Sueños y decretar así 4-1 en el global que le dio la victoria al Cruz Azul.
The second leg was played at another temple of football, Old Trafford, where Manchester United took the lead with a Bobby Charlton goal to close the gap, but again "El Centavo" Muciño appeared to score the equaliser in the Theatre of Dreams and thus decreeing a 4-1 aggregate victory for Cruz Azul.
Una victoria de ensueño para los celestes, sellada justo ahí, en el “Teatro de los Sueños”; lo malo es que a pesar de que un triunfo de esta magnitud podría haber dado la vuelta al mundo del futbol y representar un resultado legendario, no existen videos ni fotos del partido, lo que hace sospechoso que en realidad se haya llevado a cabo esta Copa Intercontinental.
A dream victory for the Celestes, sealed right there, in the "Theatre of Dreams"; the bad news is that despite the fact that a success of this magnitude could have turned the football world upside down and represented a legendary result, there are no videos or photos of the match, which makes it suspicious that this Intercontinental Cup actually took place.
Además, la historia cuenta que, el partido de ida fue el 17 de diciembre de 1969, pero un día antes los dos equipos también jugaron, Cruz Azul derrotó a Veracruz en la liga mexicana y el United enfrentó nada menos que el derbi ante el Manchester City en la Copa de la Liga; y con respecto a la vuelta, el partido habría sido el 26 de diciembre, día en que según los registros se jugó el Wolverhampton ante Manchester United. Así que al parecer este gran título internacional de Cruz Azul nunca existió.
Furthermore, the story goes, that the first leg was on 17 December 1969, but the day before the two teams also played, Cruz Azul defeated Veracruz in the Mexican league and United faced no less than the derby against Manchester City in the League Cup; and regarding the second leg, the match would have been on 26 December, the day when according to the records Wolverhampton played Manchester United. So apparently this great Cruz Azul international title never existed.
¿Una cruzazuleada de la historia? ¿Una simple leyenda como muchas otras hay en el futbol? ¿Una realidad de la que estamos dudando por falta de material gráfico? No lo sabemos, lo que sí puedo asegurar es que, más allá de no ser aficionado celeste, sería muy bonito fantasear con que un club mexicano haya dado cuenta con tal contundencia de aquel poderoso Manchester United de Charlton y Best.
A legend like so many others in football? A reality that we are doubting due to a lack of graphic material? We don't know for sure, but what I can assure is that, even though I am not a Celeste fan, it would be nice to fantasise that a Mexican club could have beaten the mighty Manchester United of Charlton and Best with such forcefulness.
