The design of chess pieces

The world of chess is full of history, strategy and great passion. However, one key element is overlooked: the design of the pieces used in chess, an important aspect that gives a game its visual identity. The chess pieces we use and recognize today are the fruit of the vision and creativity of one man: Howard Staunton.

He was looking for a design that would appeal to players and be easily recognizable. Prior to this, chess pieces were often highly detailed and ornate, which could make them difficult to identify and manipulate during play.

So he came up with a design that would become a world standard: this is clean and elegant, each piece is unique and easily recognizable. The stoutness of a king, the delicate crown of a queen, the coat of arms of a knight, the castle-like rook, the episcopal court of a bishop, the modest chess pieces; all are simple in design and instantly recognizable.

These pieces are not only visually appealing criteria, but have been officially adopted by the International Chess Federation (FIDE). This means that no matter where you are in the world, from your local chess club to the world championship stage, you will find Staunton pieces on the board. For example, pictured here is a beautiful set made by the Peruvian company Incaisa.

This universality not only brings consistency to the game, but also reinforces the global nature of chess. Like the universal language of chess, Staunton's pieces unite players from around the world to share an experience.

Thus, Howard Staunton's contribution to chess goes beyond his skill at the game and persists across all chessboard settings. His legacy is an elegant, functional and universally recognized design that brought the chess experience to millions of players around the world.
