Anecdotal Evidence That The Economy Might be Worse Than You Think

I got some of my steps while out shopping and doing chores earlier today, but the bulk of them from a long walk with our dog. She needs the exercise at least as much as I do. We have several different routes that we take but one of the regular routes, which we did today, is to a lake in an adjoining town. Part of the route takes us into a church parking lot and back out of the property through an exit back onto a residential street. A little before the exit there’s a small garden and what used to be a Little Free Library.

But early last spring when the coronapocalypse threw millions of people out of work, it was repurposed as a mini ad hoc food shelf. People could put donated food in or take it out. When it first started up there were still nights when it could drop below freezing so I wondered a bit about food safety. Freezing, thawing, refreezing, thawing — that can’t be good. Yeah, I’m a nerd, I wonder about stuff like that. Rolls of toilet paper were left there back when the stuff was hard to find. Cool.

My dog and I have been past it a zillion times. I’ve seen people in nice vehicles placing items into it and people in old beaters taking things out. Seen it many times.

But a different sight today. A shiny new Tesla drove up and a middle-aged woman emerged. She then took two boxes and three cans from the Little Free Library cum food shelf.

Sure, just one little anecdotal incident. But it made me wonder. Someone who was laid off and just had their $600 a week in extra unemployment run out?

Could be, or perhaps that was someone who borrowed somebody else's car.

You might would think that person really shouldn't be raiding the free food. I suppose one's desperation for it might be on a different level from another person's. I'd like to think that this person, even though owning (assuming it's owned and not borrowed) a super expensive car, might not have money for food. Of course, one's assumption might be to sell the car, but then again, we don't know the person's circumstances. I could work this 20 ways to Sunday, but I'm thinking I'd give them the benefit of the doubt. We never truly know what any one person goes through until we walk the mile in their shoes.

Excellent job with 12397 @actifit steps @preparedwombat! Take care and have a good night!

Selling an expensive Tesla might not be easy right now.

Cars are a hotter commodity than you'd think. The virus cut production and thus supply of new cars, and used ones are selling well too.

Come to think of it, that sounds right. More people want to drive instead of taking the bus or the train because of the pandemic.
