Bacon Jerky

Warning there be talk of bacon ahead.

No, not that bacon. Bacon Bacon. Now that would be an awesome name for a band.

My local grocery store had a sale recently on this most excellent pork product. and so I stocked up and let my prepper-side go wild. Jerky is an amazingly nutritional and shelf stable food store. And unlike can goods, jerky is quite portable.

Now are you ready to level up ... doomsday doers. Bacon jerky. It's is a thing.

Bacon jerky is actually a better emergency food than regular jerky. There a lot more calories per square inch in a slice. Fat has 9 calories per gram and protein only 4. If you ration what you eat, a couple large zip lock bags can feed a small family for a week.

But good luck rationing, right? Too tasty. Bacon jerky is unlikely to last in your cupboards. At least, if you are me.

Minime is not the fan I am.

Fortunately sales are frequent and bacon jerky easy enough to make. Beef jerky just requires slicing and salting and you can dry it raw. The clean up is a lot easier if you line your dehydrater trays with parchment. You are definitely going to want to do this with the bacon.

Things will get greasy.

Things you will need:

Pre-sliced bacon
dehydrator

(that's it)

The bacon does have to be cooked and the fat rendered before going into the dehydrator. Bake the slices ... thick cut is better ... but I have also dried thin sliced bacon ... at about 300-350. The rendered fat should be drained off. I usually keep it in a container for frying up my steaks. Remember animal fat has a higher smoking point and is less oxidative. Vegetable oils, despite what corporate science will tell you, is highly inflammatory and awful for your health.

Let the strips drain their residual fat onto a paper towel and tap them clean before putting them in your machine. Set your dehydrator at about 120 for the next 5-6 hours. Store your bacon in a sealed container or plastic bag in a cool place. The strips will keep for months. You have a ready to go quick snack or some light-weight, high calorie, and low carb trail food.

Frisbee Throws

IMG_4409 (3).jpeg

Three Basic Throws

Forehand

  • put your hand in a gun shape position
_ grab the disc between your fingers and your thumb, with your thumb on top and the inside of your wrist facing forward
  • step forward with reverse leg
  • throw with the flick of the wrist

Backhand

_ hold the bottom of the disc with your four fingers, with your thumb on top

  • bring the disk in front of your body, with the inside of your wrist facing in
  • step forward with the same foot
  • flick wrist and throw

With both the forehand and backhand throw, keep the disc parallel to the ground.

Hammer/Overhead Throw

  • grip your disk as you would for a forehand
  • hold disc over your head and perpendicular to the ground
  • step forward with opposite leg and flick wrist

Two Types of Catches

Pancake

  • catch disc with one hand on top and one on the bottom, keeping hands flat, as though clapping

Two Hand Grip

  • reach out and grab the disc with the fingers of both hands, fingers on top and the thumb below.

Ultimate Frisbee is a mixed team event, resembling football. It is usually seven a side. But there is no tackling or running with the frisbee. Teams score by catching the Frisbee in the other teams end zone.
