Chess960: My Journey on Lichess and Sharing It with Hive

Hey friends, hope you’re doing fine. I just wanted to sit down and talk about something that’s been keeping me busy lately: playing Chess960 on Lichess. And since Hive is where I usually hang out with you guys, I thought it would be cool to bring this story here.
The first time I tried Chess960, honestly it felt like someone pulled the rug under me. Coming from normal chess, where openings are like old buddies you can trust, suddenly none of that mattered anymore. I opened the board and the pieces were in places I never imagined. No Spanish Opening waiting, no Sicilian Defense hiding. Just me, the board, and having to improvise from move one. It was weird, but also kind of freeing.

I kept asking myself: how would you feel if you sat down and realized all your memorized lines were useless? Panic? Or maybe enjoy the chaos? For me it was both. At first I stumbled, made silly moves, lost fast. But slowly I started to like the freshness. The game wasn’t about memory anymore—it was about creativity, intuition, and adapting right there.
And of course, can’t talk about Chess960 without Bobby Fischer, the guy who came up with it. Back in the nineties, Fischer was annoyed that chess had become about who memorized openings better. His idea was wild: 960 possible starting positions, with a few rules so the game still made sense—bishops on opposite colors, king between rooks so castling works. It was revolutionary, and now even FIDE has official tournaments with it.

What’s cool is Fischer’s invention didn’t just stop there. People later made spin‑offs, like Chess360, which cuts it down to 360 positions by removing the ones that felt too crazy or unbalanced. It’s like a “lighter” version of Fischer’s idea, keeping the unpredictability but making it easier. I haven’t played Chess360 yet, but I like that folks are experimenting to keep chess fresh but still playable.
Back to my own games on Lichess: when I first jumped into Chess960, it was like another universe. The positions were so bizarre that the first moves felt like walking in the dark. But after a while I realized that’s the beauty. You have to think differently, trust instincts, and forget the safety net of memorized theory. Once you get past the shock, it’s really fun.

What I enjoy most is every single game feels unique. No “book move” to lean on, no database to check mid‑game. Just you, your opponent, and the challenge of figuring out the position in front of you. And honestly, victories feel sweeter, because they come from your own ideas, not something you memorized years ago.
Writing this here on Hive feels like sitting with friends, swapping stories about games. Some of you might love the craziness of 960, others might prefer calmer stuff like 360. For me, both are nice, but Chess960 gave me a way to rediscover chess without drowning in theory.

So here’s my takeaway: whether 960 or 360, these variants remind us chess isn’t only about memorization. It’s about imagination, intuition, and the fun of reinventing the game every time we play. And sharing that journey with you here in Hive makes it even more special.

Chess960 seems like you are in middle game almost from the beginning of the game
There should be new Chess960 Tournament this Sunday - opportunity to show some new moves from these games 🙂
Thank you very much for the invitation, which is very timely. Precisely through my post I am trying to motivate many more lovers of our Hive ecosystem to take an interest in this alternative to classical chess, which truly comes from a very original and timely idea of the great Bobby Fischer. And as my dear friend rightly points out, it is like starting the game from the middle game and creating the match from the very beginning without carrying anything preconceived or memorized. To put it in a few words, it was a brilliant idea by Fischer that is truly captivating.
Buena suerte con esta particular modalidad!
Muchisimas gracias. Pienso que incluso puede ayudarne bastanto en aunentar mi nivel de juego em el ajedrez clásico.
Congratulations!
