Britain’s Golf Courses: Prime Land or Untouchable Tradition?
Golf courses are everywhere in the UK... there are roughly 3,000 dotted across the country, more than anywhere else in Europe. And hey take up a massive chunk of land.
And one has to question whether they represent the best use of our limited space....?
A Legacy from Another Time...?
Most of these courses sprang up in the ’80s and ’90s when golf was a lot more popular, but that golden era is long gone and fewer people want to shell out for steep membership fees.
As a result, a lot of clubs are finding it tough to keep their heads above water.
And I am hardly reaching for my violin!
Final Thoughts...
It's well known that Britain has too few houses to meet demand.
Nobody’s saying we should pave over every bit of green. Parks and wild spaces obviously have their place. But golf courses are different: big, usually private, and not nearly as busy as they once were.
Even if we only redevelop 10% of these golf courses it could actually help the housing crunch.
I was checking some stats and less than 10% of the country is using for houses and gardens. It says 2% is for recreation and a fair bit of that will be for golf. People go on about solar using up land, but that will be even less. There is a lot of land that was industrial and could be used for housing now we've lost that work. The country is by no means full, but in cities it may feel like it. There is plenty of building going on near us, but there is still plenty of countryside.
Golf courses can be poor for nature as they will use plenty of chemicals to keep the weeds down. I don't know if any try to do better on that front. They could be havens if they keep some wild patches and water 'hazards'.

If you didn't know I've been getting downvoted for a long time on Hive
They have been trying to bully me with downvotes and words but it doesn't affect me I've been online for over 25 years
So I've dealt with people like this before it's nothing new
But what they are doing is bad Very badi joined steemit like everyone else thinking it offers freedom but I must say steemit offered much more freedom than Hive does
Everyone already knows I only post my own original content I have no need to steal anything from anyone
I've been labelled a lot of things on Hive 😂 by the biggest farmers scammers and downvoters
Actions speak louder than any words do especially when them words are coming from a compolsive liars

Oh man, people love golf here, especially retirees. we live a minute from a huge golf course (complete with grazing kangaroos) and if anyone decided to develop it, people would lose their absolute shit. But we have more space than you. I don't see the appeal myself. But if they did develop it, they'd want to make sure they kept green spaces for wildlife - what little is left in britain. Environmentally sensitive builds is the key.
I hate golf, me.
