Welcome back to Self Defense Situation # 139. Every situation is different and you cannot fit one thing in every situation. What works in one situation, that might not work in another situation. When you fight for self defense, your move should be based on the situation.

In this post, I will share my opinions about what not to do while defending a front kick. You can have a different opinion, and I respect that.

We will watch a video first and we are going to talk about it. This is not my video and all video credit goes to Shahabuddin karate. Let's watch this video.

Source and Video Credit

If you defend the front kick with both hands as you watch first in the video, your upper part of the body is open. And the attacker can hit to the neck, face, and head. The attacker can trick you. He would raise his leg to do a front kick but while delivering the kick, he can change its direction and hit the upper part of your body. Moreover, you will find it hard to defend a front kick if it is very powerful.

The next block that showed in the video that you use one hand to block the front kick and move your body a little bit. So what's the problem of doing that in a fight?

If the attacker does a front kick that is up to the chest or above, you can defend that. But how about if the front kick is just above the waist.

Most of the time, when you do a front kick, you usually hit above the waist. By doing that block (that showed the second time in the video), you will not be able to defend the front kick.

In order to defend the front kick, you just move the attacker's leg to the side. You are not preventing the front kick directly, you just redirect it. No matter how powerful the front kick is, you can do it. You can do sweep parry and palm stop block to do that.

If the attacker does a front kick that is to your face, you can do palm slap parry to protect yourself. In palm stop block and palm slap parry, you use your palm to move the attacker's leg to the side so that you do not get hit.

So what do you think about defending a front kick? Please feel free to share your thoughts and experience in the comment section. Thank you so much for reading this post.

Stay safe. Always be happy!

Yes ... always move to the side of a front kick if you can. Someone is going to get their arm broken blocking like the fellah does in the video. I find it better to block kicks with kicks and not the hands at all. Hook the knee and redirect and then you can come back in form below.

It's better to redirect the force instead of meeting force with force when you defend the front kick. If you feel the front kick is very powerful and does that with a lot of force, you don't want to break your hand. Just redirect this leg and move to the side.

Thank you so much @prydefoltz for your feedback!
