Two Most Important Factors In Self Defense

The bell rings or you hear the word begin, and the fight starts. It can happen in a fighting competition, not in real life when you are being attacked. Learning martial art and self-defense helps you to deal with the challenging situation successfully.

So how can you defend yourself from potential attacks? What are the most important factors in self-defense? In this post, I'm going to write about two important factors in self-defense.

1. Situational Awareness

If you do not know what's going on around you and where you are, it will not help you defend yourself. Situational awareness is one of the most important factors in self-defense. You know certain places where crimes occur, it is better to avoid those places. Even if you have to go there, you will be careful and more aware of your surroundings. It puts you in a better position for self-defense.

People are robbed when they go to the ATM booth to withdraw cash. You know this is happening. So what can you do to defend yourself against that so that you cannot be the next victim? Being somewhere at the wrong time is something that can endanger your life and asset.

Robbers and attackers usually look for the opportunity to attack and rob. It is better not to go to the ATM booth early in the morning and late at night. You will not see many people there late at night or early in the morning. This is the time they are waiting to make someone their next target.

You will find alternatives to do your things and avoid potential threats. Or, in some cases, there are no alternatives, you can be more careful. Maybe you can go with your friends over there. When the attackers see you are not alone, they might change their minds. You do not give them the chance to attack you in the first place.

2. Identifying the potentially violent persons

If you are being attacked, you want to see who is attacking you. You want to know the attackers. When the fight starts, that's a different picture. If you can make your move before the fight, that's always better. Situational awareness is very important, but it is not everything.

As soon as you feel that something is wrong, you can watch people around you and identify the potentially violent persons. You can see other's behavior, attitude, posture, and body language. You can see the social dominance person. He usually occupies more space and shows his dominance. Attackers or potentially violent persons act in a bad way. Because of arrogance and ego, sometimes people get involved in a fight.

The way the potentially violent persons behave, that's not logical. Maybe he is just looking for a lame excuse to attack others. Probably he is angry and not happy with his life. Whatever the reasons, if you are able to identify the attacker, you are in a better position to protect yourself. You can talk to him and calm him down. Maybe you cannot leave the place, otherwise the best thing you can do in a situation like this is, leave the place. Do not stay there and keep talking if you have a chance to leave.

When people talk and argue, they usually get close to each other. You should make the distance. In case the attacker attacks you, he has to get close to you first. And you have the time to make your move in order to defend yourself.

Keep your hands up in a way that does not show you are ready to fight.jpg

Keep your hands up. If you learn self-defense, you always hear this. If you practice martial arts, you stand in a fighting stance to fight. Let me tell you the most important things when you keep your hands up. Please do not keep your hands up with fist. It gives an obvious signal to the attacker or the potentially violent person that you want to fight or ready to fight.

You are ready to fight and defend yourself, that's for sure. But sending that signal to the attacker is not a good idea. So when you keep your hands up, keep it open. Your hands are there to quickly defend and attack. You can make your move pretty fast in case you have to.

If there is a group of people, don't just focus on a single person. Sometimes the guy who is shouting and jumping is not going to attack you first but the guy who is quiet and gets close to you in another way can be the first attacker.

When you fight for self-defense, this is not a fight to be a winner and get a trophy. So when you have the chance to get out of there, just leave. Thank you so much for reading this post so far.

Please feel free to share your experience and thoughts in the comment section. I'd love to hear from you.

Stay safe. Always be happy!
