When your life is in danger, you have to protect yourself and your family. You can use what you have as a weapon for self defense. If you have a pen, book, chair, bag, umbrella, belt and so on, you can use that to defend and counter-attack.

Even if you do not have any martial arts background or do not learn self defense, you can pick up the chair and keep it in front of the attacker. The attacker finds it difficult to get close to you. And you can hit the attacker with the chair.

When you use improvised weapons, you use the same principles when you fight with bare hands. To use improvised weapons properly, it is better to learn some self defense. Then you know what to use and how to use what you have as an improvised weapon.
