E-Sports in Bangladesh

For a country that deems itself to be so digital; we surely don't seem to be that welcoming towards any new type of technological advancement and progress.

If it's something that we don't understand, then our first innate reaction would be to oppose and repel it. Instead of digging deep and getting a head start, we'd rather follow our consistent streak of sluggish development. Such reactions nowadays is very much expected and common whenever the matter in hand is related to technology, phones, computers and gaming, for example.

Throughout the past few years we've seen countless numbers of Bangladeshi people and platforms try their best to give E-Sports and Gaming a bad name. Spreading DOG SHIT 💩 and made up crap labelled as "facts" and "legit information"; absolute rubbish that has nothing to do with videogames and gamers. Incompetent people who don't even know how to operate a basic smartphone; giving lectures and interviews, talking about gaming and its cons, and how videogames are ruining our generation. A bunch of dinosaurs ignorant adults; who aren't even interested in knowing more about the this industry and its potential, spewing bullshit in the name "patriotism" and our future generation's "welfare".

BUT, this time it has gone too far, and I've been wanting to talk about this for quite a while now.

Recently a PUBG-Mobile LAN Tournament was raided by the local police force in a community center, where a total of 108 players were present and were competing for the prize money. They all weren't just any random player or team either, some of the best players in the country and teams were present on that day. A1 E-Sports for example, a team that has represented Bangladesh on the international stage of PUBG Mobile were quite unfortunately competing in that event as well.

A1 E-Sports is one of the biggest E-Sports teams/orgs in the country; a team that has donated a huge chunk of their prize money to UNICEF and the recent Sylhet floods.

Sadly, some of these renowned young players had to spend a night in jail for being consistent and passionate towards their craft, and for thinking about the betterment of their country.

Now, I get it, this game was banned a while ago and this and that, yadayadayada. Fine, sue them all and charge them accordingly, but make sure the information you're putting out there in front of the world is precise, and not some made up garbage.

I heard that there were some issues with the venue; the police were saying that no one informed them about the tournament, nor asked for permission. My question is, why do they have to take permission from the local police? When the venue has been booked, paid and taken care of early on.

Or are these community centers built for weddings only? Weddings where no less than 200 people attend. And over here in our country, 200 people is actually WAY below the average number of attendants at a wedding.

But all of that really doesn't bother me. What really bothered me the most is the head of that local police force who was responsible for that raid. A man who's an absolute dumbfuck chad. That unlettered individual labelled the whole event and tournament as a gambling session, by saying that the players were actually gambling inside, and not competing in any tournament. And he also mentioned that the players were using really expensive phones, which probably were stolen lol.

A lot of "confident" allegations from an ignorant individual; no knowledge about gaming or E-sports, yet the man seems to be quite adamant. Only God knows where these delusional people get their source of confidence from, I'd love to speak to their dealer.

The biggest issue here is that the whole thing was televised and spread all over social media like wildfire, for which those players are now scarred for life. It will leave a mark for many of these young players, because we "baangu" people believe almost anything and everything we see on TV or on the internet.

Many of those players are now questioning their dreams and career paths. Many of them want to compete still, they still have it in them, but some have straight up refused to represent their country on an international stage, from here on. AND THAT'S JUST FU**ING SAD.

No wonder people wanna leave this place as soon as they see a reasonable opportunity and window, right?

There's still a lot of time; try to understand the young, invest in the youth, or just keep on slacking.

“Have confidence in the young people, give them a chance, and they will surprise you.” - Kofi Annan

E-Sports has great future ahead. But lack of knowledge our government & some people think gaming is bad 😃. BTW A1 Sports team did very well in world competition. I have seen some of their matches. But the recent incident sounds very weird as they are arrested 😐.

E-Sports is the future, absolutely no way around it. The growth is already humungous, it's all inevitable at this point. The ones who deny to join in or want to join in later, will only miss out on being a part of something revolutionary.

But the recent incident sounds very weird as they are arrested

Easy and root of everything.

Exactly and to be honest, even if I get a good opportunity I will fly away too.

Not just E-sports, there are other many things too that our govt is ignoring instead of addressing with the rest of the world. By the time they will realize it, we will be miles away from the others.

We will catch up, like we always do. But even if we realize it fast; the pace of our progression will still be slow, for which we won't be able to capitalize on it.
