Another massive week in cycling with the Giro D’Italia starting this Sunday the 6th of May. There are a lot of people eager for the first Grand Tour of the 2023 season to kick off, and it will run for most of the month finishing on the 28th of May. We are also posting this article as stage 3 of La Vuelta Femenina finishes up for the day, hitting the midway point of the top wemen’s road race of May.

This weeks edition of the Hive Weekly Cycling News has a lot of great news and information, but also has a little sad news as well. Firstly, Triathlete Collin Cartier has been caught doping. I know this is a cycling news article, but Triathlon kinda comes close, so thought it was still some important information to share, causing there to be a new focus on drug testing of triathletes no as a result.

We also have something to share with regards to Strava. I am sure there are a lot of cyclists using the platform, especially all our friends using strava2hive. Although, Strava are announcing an “Updated Developer Program”, this will also include a review of all applications and services using the platform. If you are using the platform for programming or development purposes, you should have been given notice that you would need to submit you app for review, with the deadline for submission being the 27th of October. I guess we will know more once this review is finished, but with all the restructures and changes happening at Strava, it will interesting to see the direction they move towards with their new Updated Developer Program.

So we won’t delay any further and get back to this weeks cycling news:

La Vuelta Femenina Kicks Off With Amazing First Three Stages

May 1, 2023 saw the first stage of the La Vuelta Feminina kick off. It’s been a big three first stages to the stage with Marianne Vos taking an early lead in the overall classification, as she featured prominently in the first three stages.

Stage one was a 14.5km Team Time trial in Torrevieja, with an exciting finish had team Jumbo-Visma standing at the top with the fastest time of the day at 18 minutes and 3 seconds. Canyon-SRAM was just a second behind to claim the second team place and Trek-Sugafredo finishing third. Anna Henderson was the first Jumbo-Visma rider to cross the finish line and as a result, took the Red Jersey after the stage.

Stage two was a flat and fast stage from Orihuela to Pilar de la Horadada, spanning 105km with Charlotte Kool of Team DSM taking a spring finish to win the second stage of the race, with Marianne Vos only a few meters behind.

The third stage was a 158km flat road race from Elche de La Sierra to La Roda, which saw a hectic day of racing due to strong winds out on the course causing problems for riders throughout the day. The final sprint saw Marianne Vos taking her first stage win in the Vuelta out springing Charlotte Kool of DSM and Chloe Dygert of Canyon-SRAM. This left Vos with the overall lead, coming into the fourth stage of the race, another flat stage running 133km from Cuenca to Guadalajara.

There is still plenty of racing to come, and the overall classification is still close, but it will be interesting to see if any of the other teams can knock Jumbo-Visma and Vos off the top spot.

Triathlete Collin Chartier Banned After Testing Positive For EPO

Last week the International Testing Agency announced that US Triathlete Collin Chartier had tested positive for using EPO, from samples collected out of competition in February, 2023, and has since accepted a 3 year ban from the sport.

EPO is on the World Anti Doping Agencies banned substances list as it helps increase the amount of red blood cells in the body, and as a result, improving endurance. Chartier would have received a longer four-year ban, but due to his early admission of guilt, he was given a one year deduction.

2022 had seen Chartier achieve two major race wins when he won Ironman Mt Tremblant and Professional Triathletes Organisation(PTO) US Open, which saw him establish himself as an emerging top athlete. According to Chartier, he sites a difficult period of injury, illness and growing pressure and expectation, that led him to begin taking EPO. Many professional triathletes have expressed their disappointment and frustration and hopefully this is not the start of a larger number of athletes in triathlon testing positive.

The Tour of the Gilla ran from the 26th of April 2023, for 5 days in the Pines Altos Mountains around Silver City in New Mexico in USA. *Austin Killips of the Amy D Foundation was already wearing the leaders jersey at the start of the final stage and she was able to break away from the peloton, with a small group of riders, in the final few kilometres. She surged to take the victory of the 110km stage, also securing her the overall victory for the Tour in the process. She was closely followed by Marcela Prieto of Pato Bike BMC with Killips teammate Cassandra Nelson taking third place on the day.

Adam Yates Secures Overall Win of Tour de Romandie

The final day of the Tour de Romandie saw overall leader, Adam Yates of UAE Team Emirates, stay clear of all the sprinting in the final stages of the race to finish 25, which provided him with enough points to claim the overall victory.

The final stage saw Colombian rider Fernando Gaviria of Movistar sprint to the finish line to take a win in the final stage. Gaviria finished ahead of Nikias Arndt of Bahrain Victorius and Ethan Halter of Ineos Grenadiers, where he started his sprint with still 300m to go in the stage.

Adam Yates secured the overall victory ahead of Matteo Jorgenson of Movistar and Damiano Caruso of Bahrain Victorious.

The Rider Who Shot The Former Head Of States Cat

Antonio Tiberi, formerly a rider for Trek-Segafredo was previously suspended without pay for shooting and killing the cat of Pedini Amati, who was the former head of state of San Marino where Tiberi lives. His suspension from the team was supposed to last 20 days, with the team donating the riders pay from the period to an animal welfare organisation.

The incident took plate in San Marino last summer where Tiberi has recently bought an air rifle and wanted to test it out. Tiberi was handed a 4,000Euro fine after killing the cat and Amati, who is now the San Marino Minister of Tourism, also called for Tiberi to have his residency from the municipality removed.

Last Friday it was then reported that Trek-Segafredo felt Tiberi’s actions during his suspension, did not meet the criteria for a return to the team as a rider and as a result both have mutually agreed to part ways, effective immediately.

Thanks for these cool cycling news updates. Very informative. I can't wait for the big cycling rounds to start.
I hope Pogacar recovers quickly from his hand injury.

Bot male and female tours have very talented riders at the moment.

You're right. The Vuelta Feminina has been pretty exciting so far and hopefully the Giro will be the same. It is a shame about Pogacar though, I think he was looking really good before he got injured.
