Do we (NGR) deserve to play in the FIFA World Cup?

Hi Everyone!

Happy Weekend! I know it might not be a pleasant one, with the crypto market causing us things to worry about. However, I know surely that it’s going to be all right in the end. It was just a scare, and there has been a decent recovery already. Let’s focus on something more interesting today… football. If you’re a football fan, you’d know this week has been a break from club football, and players are representing their countries.

Yesterday I watch the super eagles of Nigeria win against Lesotho in a scrappy and frustrating game. Yes we did get the 2-1 victory but it begs the big question. Do we deserve to qualify for the World Cup? After yesterday game, we are still mathematically alive but that’s exactly my problem.

Mathematics!

Nigeria won yesterday, and South Africa drew their game against Zimbabwe. This result means the Nigeria football team can dream to qualify if they defeat Benin Republic by at least three goals on Tuesday, regardless of South Africa’s result.

Now, here is my opinion: since I was born, or since I’ve been following football, it always boils down to this every time, last-minute hope. The Nigeria football team never gets to do the job early; they keep leaving us to grab calculators and solve probability every time. If we win on Tuesday and South Africa loses or draws, we get top place and qualify directly. But if South Africa wins, we can get second place and go to playoffs (another qualifying phase).

Nigeria football federation

I think everything is wrong with our football federation, they can’t get a good coach and still they can’t eradicate corruption even in football. The Nigeria football team has arguably the best and celebrated players in Africa and it’s not even close. So what exactly is the problem?

It stretches from the main team to even the junior level as the U-17 team failed to qualify for the World Cup too. The u-20 team that qualified was embarrassed out of the World Cup. Our u-23 team didn’t qualify for the Olympics. It’s just terrible at this point.

If you go on to X and type “Super Eagles,” you’d see so many tweets from angry Nigerians. At the end of the day, we would still support the team on Tuesday; it’s just a question of, even if we make it, do we deserve it? Would our appearance in the World Cup be respectable?

Why I’m Hopeful Nigeria Goes Regardless

I’m hopeful because, at the end of the day, I’m a Nigerian. I want us to be there. Nothing feels better than watching a World Cup and seeing the green and white stripes of the Nigerian players, the cheers, and the songs that only we would understand. It might be a Hail Mary at this point; however, I want us to make it so bad.

Also, what’s African football without the Super Eagles? We are one of the most recognizable football nations in the world. Our players are top-notch, and we have a decent history. Even if the new days have been bad, we are still the giant of Africa.
