Half the year has already passed, and among my resolutions was to visit new places and go on sightseeing trips. The truth is that I always set myself a very high goal for this purpose, with the aim of achieving at least half of it. A high goal is to go on a trip once a month, and although I haven't been able to achieve this, the trips I do take are usually very special.

This year I've only had three trips, but that's not bad, since it's 50% of what I set out to do. With such limited financial resources and devastating hyperinflation, I've been completely successful and have had some unforgettable experiences these past few months.

The last one was a visit to a nature reserve called Leslie Pantin Zoo, a marvel of nature and biodiversity close to home, which was a complete surprise to me. During this visit, in addition to learning about some animal species and their way of life, I was able to touch a super-exotic animal that I never imagined I would touch so soon: the tapir, a mammal that is distantly related to horses and also a close relative of the rhinoceros. Can you believe it? It has a snout that, in my opinion, resembles an anteater. It has a docile nature and feeds on grass, leaves, roots, and vegetables. It is very tame, and I was able to touch it and feed it carrots.

They are large, robust, and strong animals. In my country, there are legends and sculptures that depict tapirs as animals that were domesticated and can be ridden. This is how they appear in the novel written by Nobel Prize winner Rómulo Gallegos, where he says that the main character, Doña Barbara, rode a tapir to intimidate her enemies and demonstrate her power over nature and its inhabitants.

I knew there was a tapir in the Gran Sabana at a hotel near the world's longest waterfall, Angel Falls, and I wanted to go to this part of my country, Venezuela, to touch this animal. I fulfilled this dream close to home, and the experience was totally expansive. They are gentle animals that inspire innocence. In my photos, the tapirs appear alone.

When I started this post, I wanted to show the magical flora of this reserve, but I got carried away by my love for animals. In the images, there are also plants that are strange to me, which I had never seen before, especially the ones that are long, velvety red strips. They are the flowers of that plant and are soft to the touch, as if they were plush fabrics. Our nature is wonderful and has so many amazing things that a single lifetime would not be enough to know it all.

Did you know about the tapir?
