Some years back I lived on a knob in Western North Carolina. (I grew up a Yankee Suburbanite, but after leaving the service, spent most of my young adult life in North Carolina, Tennessee and Virginia).

One of my favorite activities was chopping wood. At that time I had a great deal of nervous energy and chopping wood was sort of a therapy for me. Not to mention the wood was helpful in the cold winters in Lenoir, North Carolina.

Living in an apartment complex, there is no need for chopping wood anymore. I just pay the electric bill.

I will be heading back down to North Carolina in a couple of months to spend time with my sister's daughter and grand daughters. We shall see if the old man is still able to chop at least a cord of wood!

Have a great week my friend!

It is a cathartic process for me. I grew up splitting firewood, from the time I could swing a sledge hammer and hit the wedges. I have always had the same "nervous energy" and I think my parents used splitting wood as a way to get me to work some off. I grew to enjoy the splitting and now it is for my family and my home so it has taken on a bit more meaning. Plus there is just something about the heat from a fireplace that is super comforting.

You will have to give the old maul some swings when you get there, you might just surprise yourself!
