My Actifit Report Card: June 14 2022

Most of today’s activity was from mowing the lawn.

I had a follow-up call from my doctor to discuss my lab results.Based on my poor behavior, we saw the results. He says it will take three to four months to see results from a diet and exercise change. We will check again.

Today I stumbled upon a video talking about the effort of uric acid the help develop metabolic syndrome. We mostly associate uric acid with gout. But, it also has other effects on blood pressure and fat storage. The main idea of the video is that we now have something else to monitor and control. Key takeaways were that we should keep uric acid levels around 4.5 for optimal function. Alcohol and certain foods cause your body to make uric acid. People with gout will be familiar with diet modifications. Also, we need to hydrate to lower our sodium levels. High sodium triggers a dehydration signal, which causes high blood pressure and fat storage. Uric acid also contributes to elevated blood pressure by interfering with the production of nitric oxide, which helps blood vessels relax, improving profusion. It’s a viagra effect. Also, 500 mg of vitamin C daily helps with excretion of uric acid.

The book they were discussing is Drop Acid by David Perlmutter MD. I have just purchased the kindle version to read.

Thanks for the video. I watched a video probably a year ago with someone else with some of the same information.

It's true, doctors aren't taught nutrition in Medical School. I'm convinced that they are trained to prescribe (I wonder if big pharma sends the schools money).

It's amazing how many doctors and nurses (and people in general) are surprised that my husband and I are not on any medications (we're in our 60's). My dad, in his 80's, is on a thyroid medication only - his thyroid isn't working, and my mother, also in her 80's, is not on any medication. We just don't want to be on medication if it can be avoided.

As an aside, my dad was on medication for diabetes, but the doctor took him off when my mother starting feeding him right and his blood sugar kept going too low with the medication. So, diabetes can be controlled by diet.

Eating right is always best, but I know there are times medication is necessary, like my dad's thyroid medication. Without it, he would die.

Unfortunately, good nutrition keeps changing. Well, it technically doesn't change, but the scientists keep coming up with something "new." I remember in school the four food groups, then the high carb food pyramid came into being, now there's a lot of people pushing the low carb again. You just never know what's going to be the next big thing. It's also unfortunate that many of the foods available today are lower in nutrition and/or Genetically Modified.

The more you eat whole foods and the less you eat processed foods, the better you'll do.
