Tomatoes make it out into the big wide world: April 25 2022

Today wasn't the best day to pick for the tomatoes first venture out into the world. It was chill this morning with a strong cold wind. I thought I would put them out later, in a sheltered spot away from the wind and the intensity of the sun.

But it was still cold at lunch time, and I had to go out, but I worried about leaving them in the closed porch which would warm up to a fierce temperature by the afternoon, shrivelling my little delicate plants in no time. I solved the problem by leaving the inner door open, so air could circulate.

I got back about 5.00pm, it was warm and mild, the wind had calmed down and the heat of the sun was fading. I'd leave them out for an hour or two to take the air while I was on my retreat, and bring them in as the light started to go.

I don't know if it was my imagination, but three of the four definitely looked sturdier for an hour or two outside, and one bruiser looked like it had settled into its new growing environment and was getting a wiggle on. I bet that's the beefsteak one. The tomatoes on that were enormous last year.

I think the weedy one was the cherry tomatoes.

I did well today, with 30 minutes Pilates this morning, designed for preventing osteoporosis and improving posture. It was certainly a challenge, especially for balance! Well, I haven't fallen on my face yet, and it is certainly invigorating.

We had the last session of the virtual retreat today about how to build consistent sewing/creative practice. This last session was about reflecting and adjusting practice, so it can withstand life changes and hold fast. There was something about owning practice, and likening practice to riding a bike or surfing - where you have to constantly adjust to the environment to keep riding/surfing.

I bought a tiny diary to serve as a sticker book and four kinds of stickers: one each for Pilates, walking/cardio and practice. I started looking at a daily timetable, too, but a weekly one would be better to allow for variations, like work days and non-work days.

Here's the tomatoes when they went out. Do they look any different?

Are they inside or outside?

I got some that had already spent time inside the plant shop, so they're not absolute babies.

I need to repot my tomatoes and move them outdoors afterwards, am a bit worried they might not survive the cold....

too early for them to go outside here, I'll be putting them out for longer each day and bringing them in at night.

👍 I was thinking to do that as well. I'm potting them in 2 litre plastic water bottles first so it will still be relatively easy to move around before they grow too big and I have to re pot them again. The only thing is I have over 30 seedlings !!! And that's just tomatoes. I got my bok choi as well 😟

I wish you luck with the tomatoes (you may hear a tad annoyance in my voice 😂)… I abandoned them for this year as they always stab me in the back by getting brown rot although I protect them from rain and feed them really well.
Did you ever encountered this problem? If yes do you have experience with varieties which can withhold the brown rot longer?

Not brown rot, I haven't really had a problem at all. I buy from here: organic gardening

Is it like this?
