Do We Own It or Does it Own Us?

This is my old phone

There's no doubt that the invention of the phone has impacted the daily lives of mankind. At this moment of time, most of the people around the world probably couldn't live without a smart phone. Even children are getting their own smart phones as early as three-five years old. We now live in a digital age and the smart phone has become the device to connect with others, get information, make payments and the list goes on and on.

I was born in 1996 and I believe this was just about where the world was transitioning from normal phones to smartphones. To be honest, I got my first phone at around sixteen years old and it was a flip phone just used for calling mostly. In fact, I didn't want a phone but my mom wanted me to have it for making calls. I think the first smart phone I got was around seventeen or eighteen years old if I recall correctly. It was the Samsung galaxy note two or three. Ever since then, I've always had a smart phone with me whenever I go out. So the big question I want to answer today is what will make me stay away from my phone.

Gaming

Gaming is probably the top thing that will keep me away from my phone provided the game isn't on my phone. If I'm playing PC games, I will be totally focused on my laptop trying to win the game. Lately, I've been more focused on web3 games due to the ownership and earning aspect. Occasionally, I will play League of Legends which is the only web2 game I still play now.

Anime

Anime is the second thing that will keep me away from my phone. When I watch anime, I will usually be absorbed into the show that I have no idea what's happening around me. I will rarely be bored of an anime because usually I will watch the first episode to decide whether or not the anime is interesting enough for me to keep watching. I have to say the animes this season are fire. I shared below some of the ones I'm watching and the image below isn't even all. You may ask how do I have time for this well I don't have a super active social life so that's how I have time to watch so many animes.

Sports

Sports can keep me away from my phone. Usually when I play sports, I will focus on the game and try to have fun. This is the time to exercise as well as socialize. Unfortunately, I haven't played much sports lately due to a lack of friends to play with. I actually don't mind playing any sport! I can play any sport but I'm the best at tennis and soccer. The one thing bad about playing sports in Malaysia though is that it's damn humid/hot out here. Anyways, I actually applied to join this Tennis Facebook group so hopefully they approve me and I'm able to find some people to play tennis with.

Conclusion

Phones have made life better for the world but we must not forget how to interact with people face to face. I think it would be great if people set their phones aside to have conversations with those across from them. The phone is here to stay but let's not forget about all the other things we can do in life without a phone. I'll end this post with a quote that summarizes my post.

"It is okay to own a technology, what is not okay is to be owned by technology" - Abhijit Naskar

yea well that's how life is . it's not like they wanna be noisy there and have conversations. it makes me wonder what it was like before phones existed. did people just sleep in the bus

As for the anime, I don't think i watched that before . maybe a bit too old for me :P

Phone has become inseparable companion of ours. It reduces interpersonal relationships.

"It is okay to own a technology, what is not okay is to be owned by technology"

I love this quote. Technology should be a tool for human not human being a tool for technology.

Gaming is a nice distraction. Playing games with laptop can make one forget the use of phone actually. I agree with you in that part of sport. I know how addicted people who love sports can be.

The work I do currently but the experience I can't forget was the one I had from my previous place of work. I usually stay off my phone from morning till night and it was not funny.
