UFC 286 - LEON EDWARDS vs KAMARU USMAN - FIGHT III

Source

This past weekend was full of action after a couple of great sports event happen, mainly UFC 286, F1 Saudi Arabian Grand Prix and La Liga Clasico Barcelona vs Real Madrid.
I try to follow as much as I can this three sports that I like but sometimes the its just too much content that I cant watch during the weekend, last night manage to watch the replace of UFC 286, on the main card there were three great fights.

Gunnar Nelson vs Bryan Barberena
Justin Gaethje vs Rafael Fiziev
Leon Edwards vs Kamaru Usman - Welterweight Champion

All three fights were good in my opinion, no boring fights at all, you can say Nelson vs Barberena was the slowest from the three since Nelson is more of an artist and not a brawler.

Gunnar Nelson vs Bryan Barberena

Source

Well there is not much to say when it comes to this fight, for some reason Barberena knowing that Nelson is a technical guy who would put him down quick and try to go for a submission, he lost his last fight against Rafael Dos Anjos back in December for submission so you might guess either he crank up his floor game or he has a better take down defense but it was not enough against Nelson, I have to say was not even close, I was expecting he be a bit more smart about this fight, Barberena is a stand up guy but when it comes to the floor his skills are close to none compare to Nelson and on the first take down attempt is start grappling instead of trying to get away from Nelson, or he just didn't have the strength to push Nelson away and kept fighting on his feet.

Source

Nelson put him down at the first take down attempt and quickly find his way for a full extended arm bar with just 9 second to finish the first round, the fight was over. I took a look at Barberena record and this is his third fight lost by submission so probably this is the one that either will make him prepare more to defend take downs if he prefers to go for standup fights.

Justin Gaethje vs Rafael Fiziev

Source

Next fight was Justin Gaethje a real OG and he mention that its very probably that he wont be fighting for too long anymore I have seen this guy many times since back in the day of The Ultimate Fighter around 2017. Gaethje was set to fight against Rafael Fiziev who before this fight had six wins without a flinch, he has a great record but I think Justin striking experience put him on a better position. This fight for Rafael is a great opportunity to solidify his chances for a title match in the future.

Source

This fight went uneventful, nothing out of the ordinary, this two are great strikers and the entire fight they were exchanging blows, there was no fear, no holding back, this are two guys that love the pain. Rafael is slightly faster than Justin and kept him on his toes going around the ring he was the most aggressive but Justin as the great striker he is, knew when and how to capitalize every time Rafael gave him the opportunity.

Source

Justin setup with the jap and then constant uppercut kept damaging Rafael making things harder for him, his left eye was almost close reducing significantly his vision, loosing blood and making it harder for him to breath as his nose was also significantly damage from all the punishment he got from Justing. This PPV had everything from submission, striking and a great championship fight.

Source

The fight goes to the cards where Justin won, even after he got some punishment on this left side of the body Rafael was overwhelm by the constant punishment to his face, both end the fight very well, they could go for another two rounds if necessary but sometimes fights are about scoring points and this is what Justin did by keeping his distance and destroying Rafael face from a perfectly executed jap uppercut combination. Just at the end of the fight mention that he wont be around for too long, meaning that he will probably give it a try for the championship again but this might be his last try.

Leon Edwards vs Kamaru Usman - III

Source

Trilogies are not usual but this two had history back from 2015 when they fight for the first time on December 19 of that year. The first fight was a bit slow as Usman kept putting Edwards to the ground, each time became easier just like Edwards was running out of gas although I don't think it was the case, it was very similar to fight two, I think Edwards was intimidated by Usman to be hones, much bigger guy than him with a better take down technique, first fight goes to decision, not much damage to any of the two fighters.

Source

Comes the second fight a very similar story, Usman came out aggressive and start man handling Edwards, if you watch the fight at some point Edwards eyes were wide open like he is scare of Usman, Edward's coach told him they didnt come this far for him to F it up, it was clear that it was Usman fight until that kick happen.

Source

Source

Perfectly executed, leaving Usman stone cold on the floor, then comes the question, was it a luck shot? this was their second fight putting them 1 - 1 on the score cards but 1-0 for the tittle after a "lucky" shot, Edwards is a striker, very good at it so this situation contribute to a third fight, second for the title.

This third fight took place in London, Edwards home so that factor and probably he also realize that he might have an answer to Usman, seems the left side of his shin was a bit soft, coming back from a KO is not easy, its been said that getting knocked out for fighters is very traumatic and not all of them get back at a 100% because there is that fear, in this case the fear for getting kicked in the head again and put to sleep.

Source

I cant say this fight went un eventful since Edwards was deducted one point after he was clearly found grabbing the fence after Usman attempted to take him down, he grab it more than once and a few low kicks, those kicks most of the times are accident but it was frequent to a point that Edwards ask the ref if it was ok.

Source

I cant say it was total domination from Edwards but this fight was totally different, 360 degree turn, this time he came more prepare and Usman seem to confident most of the time, when they got the octagon I thought Edwards was going to loose again just because of his face expression, but he cocked Usman legs and body slowly but surely, kick after kick it was obvious that there was damage been made to Usman legs. This time the fight goes to score cards wining Leon Edwards finishing with the trilogy, there is no doubt that this time he won despite of grabbing the fence that time, I don't think that would change the fight, he had a great take down defense for most of the part but some people may question this fight after doing things like that, its every body opinion but at the end the judges in charge decided it was Edwards the winner of the fight.
