I wish I could get excited about UFC's "fighting nerds"
If you read my posts you might already know that I am extremely critical of how UFC slowly but surely has been turning into WWE. I don't think it is a coincidence that this started to come full force right about the time that Vince McMahon started getting involved with cross-promotion with the WWE and UFC and then later was appointed to a very high board of directors' seat once WWE was purchased by UFC parent company TKO. Vince has since been removed or absconded that seat once the whole sexual harassment allegations came out against him.
It is undeniable though that UFC has definitely taken on a sort of WWE-style aspect to it with promos and trash-talking kind of playing a major role in who gets good fights.
We never really had a "clique" or a team in UFC though. Think NWO or the 4-Horsemen groups from days gone by in wrestling, or "The Shield."

We have such a clique now in UFC and unfortunately, it is catching on and because of this, that probably means that more are going to arise soon. For me, I don't really get behind the gimmick, but that is likely because I don't like for my real fights to be done in such a way.

It began as a group of Brazilians making up the group with the glasses with the tape in the middle becoming their thing and well, Joe Rogan jumped right on board with it, probably because he was told to. Jean Silva was delighted when he turned around and saw that Rogan was wearing the glasses and even though I think that guy is mental (not Rogan) I did like how happy he was to see Joe jumping on board.
Mark my words, this is the beginning of a merchandising sector of UFC and other cliques will start to form.
It's not all bad I guess and honestly, if they were to introduce some sort of team tournaments that would be great and kind of convenient seeing as how upstart GFL is introducing a team-oriented league in just a month or so.
I don't know how they would do it, but I think that some sort of tag-team fight would be very interesting as well and the fans would absolutely eat it up. There is already something like this in MMA but just in boxing and while I don't remember what it is called it is damn interesting. I think it could be a bit disastrous though, because what do you do if the other guy gets submitted or KO'd early on?
It has potential and honestly, I believe we are not far away from exactly that sort of thing happening. If they did it right, it could work... maybe
But the "Fighting Nerds" are difficult for me to get behind because of the language the group speaks. I suppose if you speak Portuguese it would be a lot more interesting and since Brazil has kind of been left behind as UFC focuses on Dagestan (who are mostly boring fighters), European fighters, and of course Americans, it is starting to be somewhat of a fading memory that Brazil had not that long ago, the top people in almost every weight category. Now they have almost none.
So this could actually work well for them because now there is a reason for Brazilians to get excited about the sport again.

If there is one thing that UFC likes more than anything else, it would be money and if this can renew the interest of South America into the MMA world, I guess that is a very good thing. For me, I would like to see them rise again and if it takes some stupid glasses gimmick in order to make that happen, then I guess I am ok with it.
I watch less and less UFC these days and getting to the point of not being bothered at all. I guess they are that desperate to grow their fan base that they would go down the WWE route and risk losing the fans they already have.
I decided after the last PPV event that I am no longer going to attend the events. The 20 minutes between each fight, the fact that most of the fights end up being far more hype than actual delivery of excitement, and the fact that cost of this all has gone through the roof as a fan, are reasons enough for me to sit most of the fights out. I will go to one of those dodgy sites that streams the fights live and just leave it on, on the other side of the room, while I do something else. I don't like to involved piracy in things like this, but UFC has done this to me by constantly chasing more money.
I watch most PPV events on twitter for free these days and I am certain there would be UFC.
there are a lot of ways to skip all the BS marketing that they have in there. I suppose if a fight was truly something amazing that it wouldn't pain me too much to go back and watch it knowing the result already. It has been quite some time since I watched an event and really enjoyed myself. There's just too much crap between fights and the 20 minute ringwalk followed by drawn out introductions, even for lower level fighters, is just annoying.
