RE: Panthers lose to Buccaneers, but can strangely still make the playoffs

I guess you would have had experience with this playing rugby as well. When I was a lad almost nobody wore gloves but I think this was a budgetary thing more than anything else. We didn't have enough of them for everyone so during the season only the QB and eligible receivers would wear them. Unless it was truly necessary like in rain or snow, I preferred to not play with them on but this had a lot to do with the technology that was available that many years ago and also because none of us on the team were important enough to have a true fit with the gloves.

you can still very much feel the ball through the gloves though, even back with the primitive tech that existed at the time.

Today's gloves offer other things such as protection against sprains somehow and they might be required equipment because it doesn't make much sense that a defensive lineman would be wearing them otherwise.

Sounds like too much protective equipment. The gloves when wet would not offer any grip trying to catch a wet ball. In rugby you could use rubber rings around your fingers to help add for grip. The old balls were like bars of soap and the new balls are far easier to handle. Humidity is always a problem as well and not just wet weather.
