Blast from the past - Rally New Zealand 2001

Hi, friends!

When you follow some sport for lots of years, it's always nice to remind yourself of some rallies that impressed you massively.

Maybe it wasn't just all about a rally, it was more about the drivers who were really amazing and the competition was just much higher then these days when you have paying guys in the works car who just can't beat top talented guys.

I just can't understand this financial part of the sport of selling the seats to some rich drivers who are not able to beat the top guys. That's why we had domination of two drivers in 15 years who came from nowhere and without bags full of money but they just conquered the rally world with their pure talent and work.

Ok, last season Ott Tanak became a champion but he had a car much better then the others. No one can argue with that. Don't get me wrong, he is a top dog but Toyota Yaris WRC was just better car then the others.

They would take a manufacturer0s crown as well if they had better 2nd or 3rd drivers. That's true and nothing but the true.

Back to 2001... We had McRae brothers, Makinen, Loix, Burns, Solberg, Kankkunen, Auriol, Gardemeister Gronholm, what a brigade of top rally drivers. That's why the sport was that popular in medias at that time.
