Why do I use left foot braking in a rally car?

avatar

Hi, friends!

I used to brake with the right foot for such a long time, as almost every other driver on the planet, until I started to drive gravel rallies more frequently. Left foot braking helped me to put the car into the balance and spin the back of it into the path and that way I started to go through the gravel corners more aggressive and quicker.

After that I bought the car with sequential gearbox where you use the clutch pedal only when you start in 1st gear and when you stop the car. It is logical that you will put your left foot close to the brake pedal when you don't have to shift the gears with the clutch.

But you have to use the clutch when you turn the car in hairpins with the handbrake, otherwise you would stall the car. Using the left foot braking technique the responses are just much quicker. Right foot is on the throttle and the left one is on the brake pedal and you play on them just like a dancer.

It is hard to start with that kind of driving because you don't have the right feeling in the left foot but with the practice in every day driving, you will slowly start to feel it better and better and that way your control of the car will be improved massively.

There is another thing how to improve the feeling. Yeah, it sounds stupid but this helped me very much. I use to play omn PlayStation or PC using Logitech G29 which is kinda very realistic so I recommend that.

That's it. Start to work on your driving day by day... :)

That's awesome that you get into how you drive so crazy and in control same time while on all sorts of different services.

Congratulations again for another excellent post. I really appreciate seeing cool car stuff like this.
