Sunday long run: Taking it easy

avatar

My legs were feeling a bit sore today from parkrun, but then I wanted to do a longer run as I have a half marathon in less than two months and I have not run anything like that distance in ages. It is another glorious morning. Not especially warm, but that is not an issue when I am running. I went for long sleeves, but no gloves and I was warm enough.

Route

I had it in mind to do the long run through Letchworth, but decided as I went on that I would do a little less this time. That did mean running up the big hill from Fairfield towards the Grange. At least the mud at the start of that had mostly dried up this time. I had a bit of a walk on the way up, but felt I had to run some of it. That hill is on the half marathon course. After that I ran part of the Letchworth parkrun course down the rough farm track and past 'Carnage Corner', which is looking churned up thanks to use by tractors. As I came out on the main road there was a guy running ahead of me and I seemed to keep pace with him for a while.

There were quite a few runners out today, but that is not surprising given the nice weather and all the upcoming races.

Pace

I was not going for a fast pace today and it was more about just working on my endurance. I managed to keep it mostly under 6min/km, but if I noticed myself speeding up much more then I eased off a bit. For the half I will be happy enough if I average about 5:40.

Run free and stay well.

Phew! that's a long run, but you're right the weather beckons. Is the half-marathon for charity?

Not for charity, but people are welcome to donate to something anyway. I find a half is enough, but I'd still like to do a full marathon some day.

A half marathon is impressive and would be challenging. Do you have to do much training other than your usual runs?

I need to do some longer runs around 16km really. Today I was not feeling like it. I have done the half distance lots of times and so I am sure I can do it again.

Yeah that makes sense. How long is a half marathon - 24km? Or something

Okay gotcha. That's a lot for 2 hours. Seems like a good time to complete it. Good luck in your coming training 💪
