.yml / YAML — Definition & Reference

YAML (short for YAML Ain’t Markup Language) is a human-readable data serialization format commonly used for configuration files and data exchange between languages with different data structures.

🔹 Key Characteristics:

  • File Extension: .yml or .yaml
  • Syntax: Indentation-based, minimal punctuation, and whitespace-sensitive

🔹 Relationship to JSON:

YAML is an official strict superset of JSON, meaning:

  • Any valid JSON file is also valid YAML.
  • YAML can do everything JSON can—and more.
  • YAML supports additional features such as:
    • Comments (#)
    • Complex data structures (anchors, references, merges)
    • Multi-line strings and folded blocks

🔹 Interoperability:

  • JSON can be converted to YAML without loss of data.
  • YAML can embed JSON inside it.
  • This makes YAML especially flexible for config files in ecosystems like Docker, Kubernetes, GitHub Actions, Ansible, and more.
