I am not sure it is referee incompetence as much as the backlash for getting anything wrong these days. Interestingly, they didn't review the penalty for Ronaldo I think - which was super, super soft.

That's where the inconsistencies come in and that's why I'd still incline towards incompetency. The Referees aren’t consistent at all in regards to which incidents get checked or what decisions are given following a certain incident. A foul on day 1 could be judged a penalty and the next day the same foul might not even be looked at. That's what frustrates me most as a viewer.
