Weeding and... what's a weed? My Actifit Report Card: June 12 2025
So today was wet and gray. Rain and not awesome. But need to get work done so I tried to transplant a few more plants to replace some that didn't take.
Needed to go into town to get money to pay a contractor who is working on my water system. Get bottles for water sampling the well, get some gas and clean out some empty bottles.
Mostly though I weeded.
Now I remember once asking what's a weed? And I didn't get a great answer. Well I think today I have a better idea.
First off... I have some plants that I like but only in certain places at certain times. Others I want to preserve as much as possible. Otherwise I just want to eradicate.
First up. Dogbane.
Poisonous to humans and animals. Exudes sap that can be irritating. Why would I keep it?
Next :
Wild roses. Now they grow well and have flowers. They also have thorns. I'm opacity a loving fence off then do they are welcome because they are pretty but otherwise I don't want then.
Thimbleberry. Big green and lots of berries. But can make big thickets of berries and need to be trimmed back. Great in some places but too much in others.
Pine trees. If they are straight and true can become valuable timber in a bunch of years. Can provide privacy and a good windbreak. I'll keep some but the rest, well too many isn't a good thing. Also for anyone who thinks that planting lots of trees is a good thing.
Overcrowded trees get thin and weak. Not awesome.
Common vetch according to ChatGPT. Looks like a pea and gives nitrogen. Good for bees and insects plus pretty. Not a weed.
Alder (probably)
Can be a nuisance but can make a good nitrogen fixing fence. Great in the right spot but a nuisance in others.
Western hemlock.
Doesnt look like much more but an important tree in the future. Keep if you feasibly can.
So. What did I do today? Learned a bit about plants and decided what to keep, what to transplant and what
