My Actifit Report Card: January 23 2026

Today I spent much of the morning walking around the streets of Surabaya. I had to smile to myself every time I saw these guard posts. I keep thinking that they are meant to keep fat people from walking down the streets.
Of course since I'm probably one of the largest people that I saw walking on the streets I guess it is a good thing that I was able to walk through.
Truth be told though. It isn't to keep fat people off the sidewalk. It is actually to keep scooters from using the sidewalk as a roadway. They certainly did that in Bali and sometimes they did it here also.

Now I really didn't have anywhere in specific to walk but I have found that walking the streets is a pretty good way to get to know the local area. However, I did think that if I was going to stay here for a while I would have to find groceries.
First stop: Grocery store.

Unfortunately getting to the grocery store was a little challenging. It is on a busy street and crossing the street? I'm glad I can move quickly!
I didn't actually buy any food though as I'm quite happy with my meals at the hotel.
Next stop. The shopping mall.

There was a really nice path going that way. No cars, no scooters, and no crossing the road. Well, okay at the end you need to cross the road but there was a big overpass which would make it really easy.

That's the mall on the other side of the road. I thought for sure I took a picture of the overpass but I suppose I didn't. Now I didn't need to buy anything today so I just turned around once finding the mall and walked back towards the hotel. I took the road behind the hotel back because it was a little quieter. Except for this building.

Four times a day they, Hmm, sing? But it is broadcast to the city and it is very noisy in my room. Especially annoying because they start at 4am and final one at 7pm (listening to it now).
Then again, I use it as my cue to actually pray and read my Bible. So, I guess it isn't actually a bad thing
Then I walked in the other direction. If I need food and don't want to walk quite as far?

Small grocery store #2. Also if I really want food and don't mind giving up on my diet?

McDonalds. Nah. I don't need fast food here, I can get that back home in Canada. Although I am curious if it would be cheaper here so I might have to go in once :)
Now the map says that if I keep walking in that direction I would end up at one of the two largest malls in Surabaya.
Sounds nice but I look at the road I would have to walk over and...

That's a lot of lanes and a major intersection with no crosswalk and no streetlight. Didn't seem like a great idea. I thought perhaps I would go a little different way and find a nice place to cross but...

Once I saw a tunnel I knew it was time to turn back home to the hotel.
In addition to that walk I also did some time on the treadmill and got some other exercise at the hotel (its so nice to have a gym)
And that was my day :)
