Lost in Surabays. My Actifit Report Card: January 25 2026

Today I moved to a different hotel in West Surabaya. The Four Points by Sheraton in Pakuwan Mall.

Why did I move? Because I want to go to a Christian church service that is conducted in English and in Indonesia that doesn't leave me with very many options.

But there is the International Church which just happens to be 450m from the hotel. How long can it take to walk 450m?

Well, I DID actually find the church but I had to resort to asking locals which...is kind of challenging because I don't speak any Indonesian. I even keep forgetting and tell people I don't speak any Singaporean (how embarassing)..

Now the hotel is actually really nice ..

I got upgraded to a beautiful room.

I have a beautiful view

There is a gorgeous pool

And again there is a beautiful weight room. I wish I was spending more days here so I would have more time to use it.

However, today was all about finding the church. It seemed that it was just on the other side of the mall that the hotel is located in.

How big can a mall be?

The quick answer is: GIGANTIC

And jam packed full of people. Now eventually I got to an exit that went to a carpark and it showed that the church should be pretty close. Within 75m.

I went to the carpark and looked around at how to go right. Nope. Can only go left I followed Google Maps and it took me around in circles and wanted me to go down roads that I really shouldn't be walking on as there is no sidewalk and they appear to be major roads.

Result: I spent over half an hour in the tropical heat wandering around roads and through a mall. I wandered into stores. I must have looked a bit crazy because honestly I was quite lost. So... I went back to the hotel. Double checked the address and found out it was on the 6th floor of the mall.

So... Back to the mall I went. Chinese New Year is coming up so they have a lot of red decorations.

So I went to the highest part of the mall that I could get to and eventually found the building maintenance just before exiting to the parkade.

Now it did mention that it was "6th floor, structure on Parkade roof". So I went out into the Parkade and looked at the stairs up. I went up a couple of flights but they dead ended.

Was I ever going to get to the church?

I got out ChatGPT and got it to translate for me (and give the address to the security in Indonesian). The first guard looked confused and asked a second guard. That guard seemed to have an idea where it was and they led me to where they think it was.

A few wrong turns but eventually we found it.

The church is actually located on the 6th floor of the parkade.

Seriously

Who puts a building outside a mall and inside a Parkade.

So, I have a habit of going to places in advance so I don't run into problems when I need to be somewhere on time I'm so glad that I did that today. Now I know how to get to the church...but who knew I'd have to leave my hotel, walk through a mall, go to the highest floor, find hotel management, go through the door to the parkade, meander through cars across a gigantic parking lot to find a church nestled in an alcove on the other side.

I'm certain that if I was a local and driving to church it would be an ideal location. Lots of parking and don't have to enter the mall.

But as a foreigner?

What a welcome to this area of town.

But all is well that ends well and I'm looking forward to tomorrow.
