My Actifit Report Card: November 17th 2023

5 years ago today, I was working at an event that was almost like a “who’s who” of Irish stiltwalkers. And it was at that event where I received the strangest instruction I’ve ever had in my 20 years as a performer.

The event was had the theme ‘Samba de Brasilia’ and involved decorating/theming an entire nightclub with jungle party vibes.
Amongst the performers, we were provided with full costumes, including a toucan, a monkey, a chameleon, and the most psychedelic zebra I’ve ever seen!

The event ran for 2 nights, with 4 performances each night by the stiltwalkers, and it was about halfway through the 2nd night when I was given the instruction that still brings a smile to my face.

A ‘runner’ working with the event was tasked with passing on messages from the shows directors and the conversation went a little like this:
“Hey man, the directors are loving how you guys are doing, and the have asked can you be more zebra?”
Me: “sure, I’m glad they’re happy. Just so I’m clear, could you tell me what being more zebra would look like? I want to make sure I’m performing as they want.”
The runner shrugged his shoulders and replied “Man, I’ve got no idea, I’m just the messenger! Now I’ve got to go and tell the toucan to be more toucan, the chameleon to be more chameleon, the monkey to be more monkey… you get the idea ?”
With that he was gone to give the other stiltwalkers their instructions..

Never before or since have I had such an unusual request as a performer.

Which brings me back to the present day, and a weekend away with herself, treating ourselves to some luxury.
